Idea's to improve the game

Have suspensions for players who flop.
I do agree on a shorter shot clock, 25-30 seconds.
Have a fourth official

FLOPPERS - No suspensions unless you're a repeat offender...but if the refs go to the monitor over what turns out to be a flop, it should be a delay of game T against that player on the spot.

Agree on the 25 Second shot clock...many teams don't even try to score until they're under 10-15 seconds anyway, would increase scoring throughout the NCAA and maybe bring fans back to our sport to fill those empty seats.

# Officials - I think a 4th official would be an awful idea...slow the game down even more with a 4th A-hole making up reasons to blow his whistle to be seen and heard...if anything I like what I'm seeing tonight in the Arkansas-Ole Miss game. With only 2 officials this game has had a great flow, let them play more but calling the big stuff on shot attempts and on the ball, very few bs calls off the ball. So lets drop it to 2!

Fewer Timeouts, 2 less for each team would give the game better tempo, with the TV timeouts why do coaches need so many anyways...but give each coach 1 replay challenge in return.

The game's fine. All it needs is competent refs to call it. Love a good Reagan quote though.

25 would be a bit too drastic of a change to make in one year. I can see going from 30 and seeing the results of that over a season or two before going to 25. If 30 seconds produces the desired speeding up of the game and the halting of the pound a hole in the floor dribbling at the top of the key offense then there is no need to go down to 25. Cutting the backcourt time from 10 to 8 would help some too, it's kinda hard to leisurely walk the ball up the court in only 8 seconds.

Why widen the lane?

Get rid of live ball time outs and reduce the number of available timeouts to help keep the game moving.

illegal defense28 second shot clockmove the 3 point line backexpand the charge linebring back freedom of movement focusno 1 and 1, right to the double bonus6 fouls until you foul out

I absolutely hate two of your suggested changes but think widening the lane might be a good idea.

No more charging fouls. Falling down is not a basketball skill. Either stand in there and play defense or get out of the way.

NBA basketball is a beautiful game.
by comparison, college ball is pigs fighting in the mud. you can thank refs being terrible at their job for it.

The game does not need to be changed. It just needs officials who are not betting on the games. Of course, that will never happen.

Why does everyone want to change the game? Its plenty fast without lowering shot clock. I don't watch much NBA because of the pace. I think allowing teams that are less talented to use the clock as strategy adds some mystery to the outcome. More offense brings less parity equals less upsets equals less excitement.

30 sec shot clock.

And what I have been saying for for a decade now, more consistency with the whole blocking/charge calls. Its like the referees themselves at least 1/3 of the times don't understand the concept of being set.

I agree basically with what Bilas said yesterday on gameday, which was :

1) Shorten the shot clock (I would say 30 secs., or even 25 secs.)
2) We need to make officials paid employees of the NCAA in order to get them to better officiate games and make them responsible and more responsive to improvement. (that's basically what Bilas said, and I agree with him) His point was only by making them paid employees will you ever get them to become more uniform and consistent, because then as employees, they HAVE to be accountable. It would also address the issues with them for # of games they ref, travel, etc. also he mentioned how they're basically contractors as it stands today. I agreed with the gist of everything he said.

Much of what ails the college game is the consistency of officiating and in allowing too much overly physical contact. Just find a way to make them accountable to what they're doing out there (the officials) and get them to enforce the rules as they are. Something has to be done to the coaches (like Pitino and others) that have basically said "let's foul and foul and foul, because they won't call them all) THAT is what is making the college game so screwed up these days.

lastly :
3) Fewer timeouts (the way the end of games are played out, taking so long, it's ruined the games for me. I hate it when a close game comes down to the wire because you just know they're going to slow to a crawl by both teams using up all the timeouts, this has GOT to be addressed, and the only way to do it is give them fewer timeouts)

I've always thought that Intentional fouls by the team that's behind during the last 2 minutes is a cheap exploitation of the foul rule. This is not why the foul rule exists. It drags out the game and turns it into a joke. There should be an additional penalty to prevent it, IMO.

Mine is start small.

30 seconds
1 shot for free throws
Less time outs, there's already TV time out
Like to see like Hockey like substitution.. :p
Flopping -> Technical foul

Didn't we just do this exact topic last month?

I'll copy/paste my original response.

1. Foul: A foul is gaining an advantage by touching the other player. The threshold does not have to be that the player falls down with a knife in his back before the whistle is blown. If you bump a guy who is dribbling above the key, it's a foul. If you TOUCH his forearm as he is shooting, it is a foul. DON'T TOUCH. Capiche?

2. No more technicals for hanging ...on the rim. The refs never call that one anyway, except on Anthony Davis for some reason.

3. No charges shall be called when the ballhandler leaves his feet. Period. Yeah I know it'll cause anarchy or something, but the refs clearly DO. NOT. KNOW. HOW. TO. CALL. THEM.

4. Flopping receives a blocking call AND a technical foul. This is not European soccer. Sissies.

5. Dunking by any player under six feet tall is a three point shot.

6. Hit by pitch advances the runner to 3rd base. This will eliminate revenge plunking.

Wait...I might have mixed my lists there...

you mean america's 2nd favorite sport and extremely popular worldwide....
NBA isn't Americas second favorite sport, I love it it's my personal favorite, but they do polls on this and NFL(35% call it their favorite sport),MLB(14%),College football(11%) are ahead of the NBA(6%). MLB will continue to be Americas second favorite for another few years but college football will replace it then.

Throw the ball up for held balls!!! I hate the arrow. Who and why did they even come up with it to begin with? What benefit is it to take the plays away from the players and put it in the hands of a friggin toggle switch?

I think the shot clock is good at 35 sec. I don't want the NBA.
I'm not sure what is meant by "do away with the block/charge". So are you saying you can step in and undercut a guy going in for a layup/dunk? Bad idea!

Do away with the jump-step. That should be traveling!
Call it when guys push off with the ball, or post guys hook with their free arm to get around a guy.
If a guy flops, call it as a 1-shot technical or as a simple foul.
Give coaches 1 challenge per game (out of bounds, goal tending, over & back, maybe a few others). TV screens are courtside, and these could be resolved in

I'd also like to throw in an advantage rule.

For example, defender fouls a player just before making a pass to a teammate wide open under the basket who then dunks with ease. The foul call, in this case, hurts the offensive team because it takes away a shot with a 90%+ make rate. Let the play continue rather than stopping it for a pointless foul.

Saw someone said limit Free Throws to just one shot? How would that make the game better?

It is guaranteed to make the games a lot longer. First it gives the defense a good incentive to foul even more.

And just then how long a game would last. Down 10 with two minutes to go. Make a basket, get two, foul immediately and they only get one shot, repeat over and over.

last 2 minutes of the game and you get fouled...get option of shooting free throws or taking the ball out of bounds
