I Remember Woodson Dumping off to Locke and Little

One thing I can't figure out...I remember some of our biggest plays, including game winners, happening when Woodson would dump off to Locke or Little late in a play and they would carve up a defense.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why Neil Brown did not do that more last season. I do know that Towles was very inaccurate many times on short screens and I'm assuming that was the main problem. Did Woodson have a much better touch on the short pass to the RBs?

That play could be incredible for us with quick RBs like Boom and King.

I haven't seen that play utilized at UK very effectively ever since Woodson left. I distinctly remember Locke taking it to the house a few times on dump offs when right before the defense got to Woodson late in a play.

Tough for a frosh to come in and start catching passes out of the backfield...especially if they hadn't done it much in HS

That's something Woodson did as a 4th year junior and 5th year senior. Tough for a younger QB too, to make it all the way through his progressions and find a dump off. Tough to have a RB leak out as a safety valve when you need him to block cause people are pouring through, around and over the line. As Towles gets late into his progression his tendency was to tuck it and run.

The dump off pass as a play call itself you could say you would like to see more often, but as a broken play, end of progressions, everyone's covered and the D is bearing down on the QB, the RB's and QB neither position group was ready for that last year. Might not be this year either from one end or another.

1) You need deep threats. Otherwise teams wont have to drop in coverage, opening up the flats.

2) You need time from the OL. The play needs time to develop, giving LB's time to drop in their zones to create the space; or for the LB to lose his assignment in man.

3) You need patience from the QB. All for the same reasons listed in #2.

4) You need a system that provides for the safety valve. Brown didn't really seem use many RBs in receiving. Just not his thing I guess.

I guess it wasn't "Brown's thing", but seems like a no-brainer to me when you have a RB like Boom. King would be fantastic with that play. I'm interested to see if it's utilized this season.

I agree, you need deep threats to open up things a little in the flats.

I'm assuming our O-Line will not be dominant this season so that's why this Woodson-like play would be so good for our offense as a safety valve.

I totally agree it would have been good. Given our poor run blocking, it wouldve been a good way to get the ball in the RBs hands.

I remember the dump-offs well. Imagine we will see lots of that this season specially to King, Williams, and Timmons!

thanks for the video...

Do you see how Woodson put that ball right on the money so Little could keep his momentum and stance? That's what Towles hasn't demonstrated yet. Can he make that short throw on the money this season? We will see.

Florida State's QB last season had excellent touch on those short throws. I watched him make them repeatedly. I guess that's why he's making millions despite his off field issues.
