Yep the bend dont break philosophy is now archaic.

Yeah, I’m not a mechanic but I know when when my truck is not running correctly.

When you consistently get no pass rush and give up 5/6/7 yard passes with ease something fundamentally isn’t right

Heard Mark Schlereth on talk radio this past week saying that, during his career, the offense's goal was to have one 65-yard drive for a score each game. One. Why? Because in his era, it was very difficult to string together 10+ play drives. He said it's totally changed today. Rules are more geared to offense, schemes are better, passing game is more sophisticated, etc. Our staff hasn't realized it yet, evidently.

Against teams with equal or better talent, you can't be passive on defense. You have to create negative plays and turnovers. It's much easier to put together 8, 9, 10+ play drives unless the defense forces the offense out of its comfort zone. We don't need to blitz every down, but rushing 3 on 3rd and long is a losing strategy.

Nowadays, a good defense will still give up 24 points against a talented team. UK will never beat the GA, AL, OK, TX of the world 17-13. Yet our defensive scheme is designed for those types of games.
