Humphries>Skal

IMO he's pretty clearly being played out of position. That experiment may need to end.

Yeah, I agree. I think UK should start Ulis, Murray, Briscoe, Lee and Poy next game though. Skal needs to lose his spot and be taught a lesson. If he does not respond...big deal, not responding as is. Maybe he has a big game off the bench against OSU.

Cal sticks by certain players every year. As even experts have pointed out, if Cal had played Ulis over Harrison we most likely would have won another National Championship. But, long-term perhaps from a recruiting perspective, maybe Cal has to do what he does in order that highly ranked players know that he has their back.

Vitale said, and I completely agree, unless Skal develops by the end of the season this team will be very good but not outstanding. Humphries is a decent player but I am not sure he is elite either. I still wonder why we don't see Skal and Humphries in there together at times but at the present Skal is totally lost.

We played some of our best ball of the season with Skal on the bench in the second half. I'd like to see Ulis, Briscoe, Murray, Poy and Lee. Matthews as the first guard/wing off the bench, Willis as the first big off the bench, and then work in Skal when we have foul trouble.

Skal stat line today:

0 points
0 rebounds!!!!
0 assists
0 steals
1 block
5 fouls
13 minutes

I agree with Jason that the kid is never going to be a center, so Cal need to quit trying. He is not AD...he is not KAT...he is Skal, which means he is a slightly hybrid forward and not a post-up, back to the basket player.

Problem with your logic is if not for the Harrisons UK gets blown out by Wisconsin in the 2nd half and never regains the 4 point lead you think Ulis and Booker would have held.

I don't buy the "He'll get it" argument. At first it was, "It's just nerves, he'll be fine.", then it was, "Just gotta work the freshman out of him, he'll improve.", now it's, "He'll be ready by the end of January.". You can keep sliding the timeline back and hold on to that hope, but Cal's players that are gonna develop respond by now, and Skal is doing things that you should learn way before the college game are no-no's.

It doesn't get worse than his stat line today, and I think Cal is moving on by Humphries and Willis getting extended run. I think we saw Skal's one and done status get burnt today like a football coach burning a redshirt.

Skal had a game with 26 pts. Call me when Humphries does that.

He is clearly having trouble learning to play the post position and his confidence is shot. We have seen his talent in early games though. I think it's funny that people are saying he was so overrated and that he "sucks". We've had plenty of freshmen struggle early, but this season it means that he really just isn't any good I guess.

I've heard enough excuses for Skal. No more moving the goal post. The guy had ZERO rebounds in this game. That's how he responds. I don't care about the points. Zero rebounds shows no heart and no effort. It actually shows he didn't give a rip. He's 7'0, playing center, and not playing world beaters. He should have logged a few boards.

He should be on the bench, recruiting aside.

Yes, because that's where players really get out of their slump. Good Lord, I thought you were a better poster than this. Giving up on a kid 10 games into the season. So, he's not Wall or Davis or Towns. He probably had a third as much playing experience as those guys coming into this season. He's having difficulty adjusting to the game at this level. So what if he was overrated. He's here and we need him to get better, not rot on the bench where he is sure to not get any better.

Stop being so sensitive. I said he should be on the bench, as in not starting. I didn't mean he should never play.

You don't seem to understand zero rebounds for a guy of his stature. He didn't give effort. He shouldn't be a starter right now.

Ok, I can agree he should come off the bench, but the way some were talking today, they are already done with him. Sorry that I mistook your meaning.

Too bad we didn't have a backup pg to play over Harrison in '14, right? So maybe we would have been champ instead of runner up?

Y'all kill me with that crap. Go put it on a t-shirt or something. Get it out of your system.

I'm not supposed to be drinking but I have been the last few months. Might help explain some things.

One thing I've come to realize about the Harrison's is, their attitude reflected their desires. They were winners, and winners are alpha dogs. They butted heads because that's what alpha's do, even if that's the coach. They'll do well in life.

They were good players man! So disrespected. Only one team can win it but they helped is get really close twice.

Call me when Skal lands 26 against a team that isn't directional tech.

Huge difference between struggling, and looking so bats*** terrified it looks like you have runny diarrhea down both legs out there. That's Skal right now. Goose eggs. He had goose eggs in every stat worth keeping in 13 minutes play today. Tell me when Humphries does that.

Am I saying bench Skal for good? No. But at the moment in time, Humphries has better energy and better physical play out there and should get run over someone who looks scared and lost. Bench Skal until he figures it out, if he ever figures it out.

Cal will provide a tweak to Skal's game and he will prove he belongs.

A tweak? Unless he's got a bionic microchip for Skal's frontal lobe it will take a hell of a lot more that a tweak. Skal is miserable. Literally, doesn't have a clue how to play this game. My grandmother was a better interior presence playing in our driveway when she was in her 60s. She never jumped for a rebound because she was always knocking my friends to the ground with her big ass.

Humphries and Willis deserve all of his minutes.

I really feel for Skal as it seems like he has hit rock bottom as far as confidence and doesn't seem very happy at all. I hope this young man can get this turned around soon.

Is skal motivated right now? I mean he's played terrible and chad fordes latest has him 2. It seems he's 2 regardless of his effort. Is there incentive for him to put it all on the line?

I'm sure that Cal would tell you that the 4 and 5 are interchangable in his offense.

Now if you are talking stretch 4, Skal can't handle like T. Jones or shoot like Kyle.

Sure Skal has potential in the pick and pop game but Cal has shown he will not run set plays just to complement a specific players game.

Mulder will not be ran off screens while he's in the game. He will get his looks the same way Murray and Briscoe do or he'll be SOL.

Really don't know if Cal can right this ship(Skal). Cal didn't have some magic solution or "tweak" when the Harrow situation went south.

Can't deny that Skal and Harrow have similar traits.

I don't get the Skal anger. We are 9-1. If Skal does not improve at all we are still good enough to compete for the title in March. There are no dominant teams this year and the tourney is a crapshoot anyway, so we would have a shot even without Skal......though I fully expect him to come around at some point.

That stat line is something to behold (and his defense was terrible too). How did he manage to get 5 fouls without doing anything else? Kid is just SO lost out there right now.

I'm not going to sugar coat it. I'm really concerned about Skal. Slumps and freshman adjustments are one thing and can be corrected. Yesterday Skal gave ZERO effort and that's just not acceptable. The telling part about his game right now is his complete inability to rebound and total lack of defensive presence. That's effort and desire, or the lack thereof. I hope he doesn't pack it in. He isn't enjoying playing right now and it's obvious. Cal has his work cut out.

Agreed.. Why would fans want to bash two players that were here two seasons and got us to two final fours. We should be grateful for their effort. Especially their freshman year. They put that team on their backs.

I usually don't question our coaching decision. But I am now..The 'plan' early in games has been to go to Sakl early, force it to him. Its not working. Its putting pressure on him, and the guards are getting frustrated because he is out of position and getting pushed around. Skal cannot post up at this point. He needs to be sent off screens to get the ball. Being used a center, posting up is not working. And it is killing ball movement with guards trying to stop and force it in to him. And on defense, when he is in there, we need to play zone. Just 2 things I see. When something isn't working, try something else. He is getting worse and we need to change strategy. We are going to need Skal in the post season, so Im fine with working on him now in game, but its clear that his growth is dependent on getting the ball facing the basket off of screens, NOT posting up back to the basket. Get him in pick n pops, or screens. Its time to try this, stop posting him, he isn't responding to it.
