Kaboom!

Adding Humphries impacts our next team more than some people might think. Humphries isn't in Labissiere's category as an impact player, but Humphries may surprise people with his ability to contribute once he makes some adjustments to college ball. This is probably the end of any need for Wynyard to join the team in January. Wynyard's best interests are served by joining the team in October, 2016. Adding Humphries this fall makes this the best solution for all parties. Both Humphries and Wynyard are big, raw players. But Humphries is longer and more familiar with the way the game is played in the US. So Humphries understudies Labissiere this year, while Wynyard accommodates and works on conditioning. Better for everyone. But the most important impact of Humphries is that Labissiere can be rested without having to slide Marcus Lee into the 5 position. Thin, aggressive baseline players tend to accumulate fouls while fighting for position in the lane. To date, Lee has been foul prone. It is likely that Labissiere may also be foul prone early in his Kentucky career. With Humphries on our team, Calipari can rest Labissiere and keep him out of foul trouble. Now we have another team that can play 9-10 players and stay fresh.

Not sure if this is what you meant or not, but wouldn't we assume Wynyard enrolls in January and joins the team as a redshirt this year, so that he can practice with the team and get in our S&C program?

I agree with you to a point, but I still believe Wynyard should join the team in December.

He can just redshirt.

The New Zealand school year ends in December, so if he didn't join the team, he'd be over there for about 6 months, having to work and train on his own.

Instead, I think he should come over here and redshirt second semester. Practice against Poythress, Lee, Humphries, and Skal everyday, workout with our staff, get to know the team, and be ripped and ready to go next October.

The best thing about this is that, unless Humphries blows up and has an incredible year, both he and Wynyard will be the big men that we need for the 16/17 season. The 2016 class may be loaded but the pickings are pretty slim at the center position. Cal is a genius!!

Don't forget about Sacha Killeya-Jones for next season also [smoke] Cal is the MAN

Now, all we need is Wynyard to be ready for the second semester and we will have almost a perfect team. Won't really have a true 3, but that's something Cal can work around. Even without Wynyard, I think we have plenty enough.

Yep. Mulder is probably our closest thing to a true 3 man, and from what everyone is saying, he's going to be a lot better than people think, so I'm pumped for him!

I'm curious to see where Humphries fits in on the team.

Poythress, Lee, and Labissiere should get the lion's share of minutes at the 4 and 5 spots.

I figure Humphries will play about 8-10 minutes per game as a fill in for foul trouble.

But Cal does love size, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him play three bigs together a lot. With Humphries coming off the bench Cal could start Poythress, Lee, and Labissiere together. Humphries would get more minutes in that situation.

I would rather see Poythress at the 4 spot most of the time, but I don't know if Cal feels the same way. He doesn't seem to be sold on a three guard lineup, based on recent interviews.

I did not address that. I am only saying Wynyard's eligibility clock will be started for Kentucky's 2106-17 season. Not this coming January.

Mulder is not a 3. But you are right in 1 way. This team does not have a true 3 in the traditional sense. The closest is Murray, but he really isn't a 3 either. But this team will not play like most teams play. Calipari will build this team to bring the best out of what he has. This will be a 3-2 type of offensive team, with Ulis, Briscoe, Murray driving into the lane to create shots and entry passes to our bigs. On the offensive end, Murray and Briscoe will create matchup nightmares that will drive other coaches out of their minds. The true test of this team will be on the defensive end, where adding Humphries helps us a lot by keeping Labissiere and Lee out of foul trouble. We will run up against some teams with big, athletic wings that will also give us matchup problems, and we will just have to out score them in transition. That's where Murray makes us special.

Actually, technically speaking, he's a 3. He's played the 3 for his entire career. He's not the biggest, but neither was Justise Winslow, and Duke put him at the 4.

Cal wants Poy at the 4 too actually. He has mentioned in interviews how the NBA has shifted to more undersized power forwards and it gives Poythress the opportunity to play his natural spot. Personally I'm ok if Poy plays spot minutes at the 3 while someone rests or whatever. But if he starts at the 3 and plays most of his minutes there, there will be many a beer thrown at my tv this season.

Justice Winslow is 6-6, 225, bigger and stronger than Mulder, and played in a completely different system. That comparison is meaningless. Mulder is not a 3. He may have been a 3 in high school or at a juco. I'm sure you understand that we aren't talking juco here. Calipari will not use a conventional wing forward this year. We will see 3 guards at almost all times, and a lot more DDMO.

Blue Decade, I agree with your opinion about Wynyard not needing to play until the 2016-2017 season, but why not come to UK early and join the team just as a practice player/redshirt to get some extra experience with the team and work out with UK's staff and train against UK's bigs? Could that be a possible course of action?

I am excited about this addition. If Poy isn't ready, we will have enough depth.

Would anyone be shocked if 'Hump' only plays here 1 year? I would not, given how the draft is based on potential.

That's the thing. With John Calipari, we don't need a 2-year rule in CBB. He has adjusted his recruiting to get us there while keeping an eye out for the very best OAD's. Dude is amazing!

Um,, just no.. Poy cannot play the 3.. He has one year to better himself to get drafted,, playing the 3 is not an option.. Unless him and Cal have no desire for him to play in the NBA..

His coach is saying he's a 2 year player regardless of where he went.. As in he has no choice but to play a minimum of 2 years the way I took it..

Only at Kentucky, you can speed your growth to the NBA faster. If UK wins it all this year Humphries may be drafted early.
