How To Stop The Tennessee Offense Thread #2

Sounds like confirmation of what many said in the other thread. Take away deep shots, take away the middle, push the throws to the outside, come up and tackle on short catches. If they make those long/intermediate outside throws with consistency, you just have to live with it.

I'll be curious to see how we use simulated pressure. With the pace we won't have time to disguise anything. Plus with the splits we won't be able to bring secondary guys.

I think our blitzes will come off the edges with our LBs primarily.

Read about the variations on the routes they run and how everything they do is based on what defense they see. The tempo can kill your opportunity to disguise your looks.

Fun stuff.

Iowa St D also had some good success against high powered Baylor & Riley's Oklahoma. Their keys were pinching hard 3 down D linemen, to take away easy draw handoffs to RBs or QB draw, while 8 back off in tight zone covers.

They’re going to score 35+ . Our team just needs to expect that and not get down when they score . And just because they may go up by 14 doesn’t mean our OC can crap the bed and stop running the ball . That’s when we’ll get boat raced . we have a very good defense. They could play a perfect game and we’d still lose imo. Tennessees offense is that good and our offense leaves a lot to be desired.

We run like different 8 plays from the same formation. It always looks the same for the LB calling the D.

We line up…look to the sideline again for the call based on the D… and choose whichever play looks to work…deep , mid, sideline or run. Add motion to confuse.

We even brought in some old school power I for short yardage. No kid alive knows how to deal with that anymore ha

CMS is going to have to play a lot of dime with his 5 fastest dbs on the field most of the time until UT runs the ball down our throat.

UT's X factor is Bru The Felon McCoy in the slot being covered by a lb or a safety. This is a layup for UT offende anytime they HAVE to have a play.

LB can't cover his speed, and Safety has to choose whether to come up to cover or stay back and protect the deep ball to split WR.

Hooker reads the safety and either has a wide open WR down the middle of the field, or McCoy open for 15-20 over the middle.

That's the reason you will never stop UT with zone play. Hooker and this offense will always find the matchup they can win.

Put you best cover db on Hyatt and Tillman, and your fastest, most physical db (whether safety or corner) on McCoy and man up all over the formation, regardless of where they shift to, and see if UT can beat you with WR 4 and 5 or TE.

Imo, DO NOT BLITZ them. Blanket zone and set back and hope to get some picks. Blitzing just gives them more matchups to exploit. But what do I know, I figured bama would have figured it out.

A fast start is essential to have a chance. Under Stoops when we are leading at half we win most of the time and when losing at half we lose most of the time. So don't panic when they score early, just keep yourself in the game at halftime. Just play back on D and make them work hard getting down the field. Maybe they turn it over a couple of times playing that way. We should be able to work a lot of clock when we have it with CR and their poor pass defense combined. With guys like CR and WL, they have a lot to worry about also.
