Zero experience recruiting or learning the college ins/outs, I give him 3 years. Maybe 4. I like him, great guy, but watching his interview on how he's going to run the same plays as the teams do in the NBA makes me think he's a day late and a dollar short.

3-4 years tops, IMO.

Can't imagine the grind of recruiting is what he wants to do. Plus JT is always looking over his shoulder.

Recruiting as we know is crucial. If he can land some good classes he'll do fine. They won't ever be the force they were back in the day.

With the current situation Georgetown is facing, hiring Patrick Ewing is the most intriguing thing they could've done, IMO.

A world recognized NBA Hall of Famer coming back to his college home to turn the program around.

It is a heck of a front page title, you must admit. The boosters are probably jumping for joy. I have zero doubts he will be able to recruit well due to name recognition alone. ESPECIALLY big men to the school that gave us Ewing, Alonzo, Mutombo, Hibbert, Othella Harrington, etc.

I hope Ewing succeeds in bringing Georgetown back to a nationally feared program as they once were under John Thompson.

In my completely worthless opinion as always.

I still have a strong dislike for GT from the Thompson era. I like this hire because I don't believe it will be successful and GT can remain little more than a mid-major.

I agree that it was an intriguing hire. It will either be boneheaded or brilliant. There is no in between.

I just hope Georgetown doesn't suddenly become attractive to Bamba, with one of the all-time great post players coaching there.

Almost as intriguing as when St. John's did it 2 years ago.

Till he crashes and burns like jt3. I think he will have a few decent years but will never have a huge impact

I think being a Hoya will buy Ewing a little bit more time than most people outside the family would get.

Pat has a really good reputation in the league and by all accounts has really be busting ass coming up the assistant ranks.

Luckily for Pat and G-Town, we are living in a era of real parity. In 5 years time Frank Martin got SC to a final 4. Dana Altman has had Oregon advance multiple games in the dance every year since his third year, and now has a final 4. Brad Stevens took Butler to consecutive title games in just a couple years time as HC.

How long does Ewing last? Probably longer than Kevin Stallings and Tubby.

Never understood people pushing for NBA guys with zero experience recruiting.
He'll hire assistants with recruiting experience. I'm curious as to why many assume he wouldn't like or handle the grind of recruiting? Based on what?

Ewing was best Georgetown could do. He had to mention the "NBA" stuff offensively to get word out that he's disassociating himself/program with that stupid crap JT III utilized. That was suicide with recruits/their people.

He's come out and mentioned his focus is going to be '18 class as he knows it's a late start to '17 class and he needs to hire a staff. One name to watch that Ewing may target--Kenny Johnson--Louisville's top assistant. He's former Team Takeover from Nike EYBL guy and could be groomed to take over. Patrick is 54 years old, he's not going to want to do this nor does he have to for very long--he's a transitional guy--and think he'd be smart to hire a guy who could be groomed to take over and unlike Syracuse/Boeheim, Ewing would step out and either enjoy retirement or return to the NBA.

Focus for Georgetown has to be keeping DMV (DC, MD, VA) kids in area and to play for Hoyas.

I see no reason why he shouldn't be successful. He has the name and all he needs now is a hotshot recruiter.

I think people are underestimating how respected he is in the coaching industry. He's been in the NBA for over a decade and was considered a major prospect for an NBA job. It doesn't change his experience, but he's got a ton of connections and Georgetown hasn't ever had a problem getting talent. I think he will actually do pretty well. Georgetown also has super high expectations. They still want to re-create the 80's when they were a premier college basketball program. Not happening now.

He'll be given extra time just as he was given extra time to complete the college entrance exams because of a reading disability. He will be a terrible recruiter unless he picks up someone like Slice or KP or OA as an assistant. He will be an intimidating and inarticulate presence in the home. There's a reason that the Shaka Smart's and Kevin Ollie's and Avery Johnson's got HC jobs years before he did despite years as an assistant in the NBA .

lmao Ewing as coach at Georgetown is a joke. They are dumb as crap for thinking he could win.
Good Lord please let Duke hire a Ewing some day. Please ol please!

I'm not sure that Ewing was the best they could do, but maybe he was the only thing they could do to pacify the John Thompson crowd.

I'm sure they want him to be successful but if he fails I bet they pull the plug pretty quick

I see what you did there at the end, cya.

Here's a question: Has the "hire former NBA Hall of Famer with zero prior college coaching experience" plan ever worked for anyone?

Because EVERY SINGLE TIME I can remember anyone trying it (see Clyde Drexler at Houston, Chris Mullin at St. Johns, Isiah Thomas at FIU, Sydney Moncrief at UALR, Willis Reed at Creighton, etc.) the result has been dismal failure.

Given that woeful track record, I see no reason to believe Ewing to Georgetown will go much differently. I suspect this will end in train wreck.
