Cal being the innovator he is I see him pointing recruits to other teams where he knows a coach is going to be good for that kid. (He may do it already.) Kentucky isn't for everyone but I bet Cal is for helping all the kids and will help them whether they are Cats or not...

I am talking about lesser players...NOT Top five Star players.....I should have clarified... ouch..

I agree.....I bet he told Okafor, Jones, Allen, and Winslow to all go to Duke cause Coach K is a wonderful coach and they would win a national championship. That Cal, he is such an amazing guy.

I never said top recruits but I bet recruits that may want a UK offer or to play for UK will be guided to where they may have the best chance to succeed.

Why go off the deep end every time an off the wall comment is posted. I wasn't suggesting Cal is going to steer a top five star to another team...geez.

wow. i have been provoked to thought.

For the first time? :)

Again I'll state I did not mean top tier 5 stars.... (I guess I should have clarified..or is it Clara-fied..)

I think Cal would help a player in a minute that he himself knew was not UK material.

I'm still pissed he didn't work harder on Wiggins. Why recruit for Self?

I don't think Cal brings in top players that he doesn't want for a consultation saying, "You know what, I really think you should go to KU/Duke because that Bill Self/Mike Krzyzewski can help develop you in to the player you want to become." Would be counterproductive to steer kids to other powerhouses giving those teams better chances to beat us during the season. I think Cal is a great guy, but c'mon, you can't be serious in thinking this is something that he does.

Clearly BBUK has clarified his statement and yep, the harping goes on. This board is a wonder of the world. At any rate, I'm sure Cal already does that, as well as many coaches who actually care more for the kids than themselves. How openly he will do it? I don't think he will. Cal loves the spotlight on certain issues, loves it. This is one where I think he would be concerned about embarrassing a kid. Just my 2 cents. The flying monkeys may continue now.

While I am not necessarily agreeing, but you don't think Cal may run across a player every now and then that doesn't fit what he wants at Kentucky, and wouldn't steer that player to Antigua? I don't think Cal would steer a player to another powerhouse, but I could see him putting in a word for some of his coaching lineage. Having said that, I could see Cal steering a player toward another powerhouse if he thought it would help his chances with someone else. Like perhaps steering a top 20 player toward Duke, because he is battling Duke for a top 5 player at the same position.

I am not sure Cal would "steer" a player to a certain school as much as I think he'd steer the player to a person or program that would help most for what Cal may perceive as what the kid may need to reach his goals or even what Cal thinks that kids goals may need to be. (If not the NBA he may be a good coach, instructor, announcer, or totally something else.) jmo

From what I have watched of Cal I see him doing this. I do not know a marketing strategy Cal may use but you can bet if there is a way he will find it and use it to further his cause....oh well...

I just like it. Nothing more, nothing less. (Not the above post...) :)

LOL. I had deleted it before you responded. I forget we're all different ages here and I wasn't sure some would know that old 80's skit from Saturday Night Live. [winking]

I remember it well. Just fit the way I posted, nothing against your post. I'm all for having good fun. Be Good

I actually think this would be interesting concept.

I would actually see it as a possibility.

You know it's near the end of summer when the thread topics get this ridiculous. Good lord.

It's really that ridiculous of a post? Really? Did you read it or is it just your pat answer? I could see if it was my first post but I think I clarified enough to where it may not be "that" ridiculous. Unless Cal is a liar about what drives and motivates him....please confirm you think it is that ridiculous. Thanks

Don't be too hard on the OP. He has a point.

When I asked Cal if he had a place on the roster for me, he told me to go to Louisville. He said that Pitino would love to have me. But, Pitino is a good guy too. He told me to call Tom Crean. Tom isn't so bad either. He told me that maybe there was a spot for me in special olympics. I am going to call them next week!

Yer bad..... just stomp me. :) (tell the truth CC actually said; "You are special to me." Right, come on preach....)

Yeah that would be SUCH a nice thing for him to do. "Yeah bud, I know you and your family have been putting massive amounts of time and thought into your recruiting process, but listen to what I think. You're wasting your time trying to be recruited by me, we don't want you. I'll tell you what though, Ill give my buddy Orlando a call and we'll get you set up real nice at South Florida, hows that sound?"

Trust me, Cal would never waste his time advising recruits that he has no interest in. Pay attention.

Trust you? Nah, It's probably more like: "I like this and that about you, in your game I like this and that about it, I have others I am working another way but I think you have potential if you will focus on.....If I were you I'd contact him or him or this school as they are able to help you do this which will in turn allow you to.... If you'd like I can call them or give you their contact number....If you need me to assist let me know.." There is a way to sell. It may be wise to learn a few tricks of the trade...that is basic 101 stuff...

Very serious once I clarified the statement....I can see where some may think I meant top recruits. (Not sure they need any help...)

I know you clarified and I could almost agree with you to a very minor point about steering players (maybe) to one of his former staff members but I really still doubt that too. Of course Cal cares about the kids, that's a well known fact but I just think you are carrying on a bit too far with Cal helping kids out to go to another school to play. He's got so much on the table now with the UK program that I doubt he could afford any further time trying to help recruits land a scholly at another school, just don't see it. Plus, your thread topic states "openly recruits for other teams". That suggests he is going out of his way to get recruits for other schools so that causes you a lot of confusion with other posters too, I think. Sorry, but we will just have to disagree on this point, I really doubt Cal is connecting kids with other schools.

Relax..... I was just joking around. Just a little sarcasm. I see your point.

:) Not stomping....just having a little fun with the idea. I actually get what you are saying.....These coaches run into a lot of players and I don't think it is beyond belief that a coach might tell a kid, "You know, you would be a nice fit for this or that program." I don't know if they do that or not but it wouldn't surprise me.

I think he does steer kids he knows won't fit here (for whatever reason) to his friends in the coaching world. All coaches do this so they can potentially benefit from the same down the road (although this applies less to Cal because he gets 90% of the guys he wants anyway).

But not to coaches with elite programs like K or Roy or to other SEC coaches.

I know, sorry as I read my response I sounded more intense than I meant to sound. You're a good poster. Is Ole Elmo around anymore? (My random thought for the day...) :) be Good

That's a whole lot of conjecture. Thanks for the basic 101 lecture, I'll be sure to not use your basic advice when dealing with clients. You are basic...BIOTCH (Amiri King voice)

No need to be hard on the OP. You can be sure that Cal already does this. All coaches do it. Go play for my buddy Larry Brown. He's great at developing X to get you to your goals.....

This thread has restored my faith in lynch mobs.

They are good posters. They are just messing around in the off season. It's all good, they can bring it a lot harder than they are. They must like me.

Be Good

Your almost right op
Cal gifted Emmanuel Mudiay to SMU.
Now we all know how that worked out for his mentor Larry Brown.
Isnt coach brown being investigated for playing other academics refugees
Death penalty well no but i bet carolina fans are pointing fingers until they realize we cant eat our own;lets crucify womens bb instead.

You know, they say heroin puts you in such a euphoric state, that you'll pick up the phone, then call the phone company & US Post Office, just to tell them what a great job they're doing. OP????
