How Do You Think Cal's OAD Methods Will Be Viewed Years From Now?

You have schools, fans and media that criticize it, yet there are top-rated coaches that scramble to imitate it. So how do you think it will it be evaluated in retrospect when everyone steps back to look at it as a whole (if it ever changes) through it's successes, short-comings, etc.?

If he quit today, he was one of the most successful coaches during his reign at UK, how could it not be good?

But it needs to play out.

Again, the OAD topic is the absolute wrong issue discussed on this board.

#1 People dont want to replace a star with an average player.
#2 OAD has put us in a position to win it all every year but 2.
#3 The lack of titles can be argued that the blame lies squarely within these reasons: Cal's in game decisions (stall ball, time outs, zone UConn)
Referees (they just suck)
Injuries to key players (2014, 2015)
We just couldn't make shots (2010, 2011- But not near as bad the 1984 senior laden team vs Georgetown)

We were so close so many times and it wasnt the players we had that prevented us from winning. Had we not had those injuries or terrible refs we easily have 2 more Titles and the OAD and Cal are the most awesome thing ever.

Since he has no control over NBA eligibility age, he shouldn't be judged by when kids leave for the league. He'll continue to recruit the best of the best. As soon as they leave, whether it's after one year or four, he'll replace them with more of the best.

No one can really argue against the success of the "OAD" really, but as an old man who has been following the Cats since the 60's, I wish it had never happened.
I like seeing the guys grow each year but I realize times have changed whether I agree with them or not.
There are many things that has changed over time, some good, some maybe not so good. The great thing is everyone is entitled to their opinion, whether it is something you like and agree with or not.
Laugh if you may, but I see the day when the NBA changes the college game even more so then they have with the OAD.
Just like the internet has changed the way people shop, many old time stores are closing up due to everyone using the internet to shop.
I think one day the college game will so watered down, it might look like an AAU game.
Kids leaving high school to get an early start in college like Diallo has done, I think will be the next thing to change the game.
Wont be long some of them will bolt for the NBA without playing a day in college but with months of practice with a college team. Its going to happen, just watch and see.
What ever changes come, Coach Cal will run with them and still find success. He is a winner.
For some fans, the NBA is all that, but to me, if it doesn't have the word "Kentucky" on the jersey, I don't give a rats ass.
I care about our guys having success, but the bond between players playing for a college team and its fans is slowing dying out.
Sit back and enjoy the ride and hope it lasts a long time.

Wish they would change it to 2AD so I wouldn't have such a hard time learning new starters names every year. I think we would be unstoppable if we could keep some of these players 2 years and the game would be more fun to watch. Seems the kids only just start clicking when they punch their ticket to the NBA.

I agree blue, I am old school too but you can't argue with Cal's success at playing the NBA system of OAD. I do however hope your other idea with the high school to the NBA thing never happens. If so all the things I have loved for years in Kentucky basketball would make me sit back and think if I still wanted to be a part of it.. jmo

It can't be imitated but by a small hand full...since it requires sending kids to the NBA as top draft picks. This is where I think some people are confused about OAD.

It's not really a plan...it's a combination of great recruiting + preparing a kid for the league + history of draft and NBA success by Cal's players.

The more success, the easier the recruiting top kids...it just feeds itself.

I recently met a Wisconsin fan and was shocked when I told him I was a UK fan/graduate and he said "he takes a lot of grief for the OAD rule, yet he's been against that rule from day one."

You and a few of your long time posting buddies are butthurt since I said UK AND EVERY OTHER SCHOOL has a lot of dumb fans that chase referrees around the internet. That's THE reason several of you have run your mouths from the day I signed up. I think it's hilarious that some of you think you're cool because you've posted here since birth.

Easy killer, I liked your post.

I was just mocking all the grief you have been getting.

I havent disparaged you.

How it will be viewed implies that at some point OAD will go away or change into some other form.If that happens(and it likely will to some degree) then I think it will be generally agreed that Cal made the best use of it and was the first and best at managing the system.

It depends on how whoever is making the judgement call chooses to view things (titles won, games won, most players drafted or a combination of all those metrics)Cal will stand at or near the top no matter how they choose to look at it if it is fairly evaluated.

Living in the real world and not fantasy.

Maybe one day ppl will see all the other coaches short comings and failures, like Roy, k, and Rick
