Honest Roy Williams Furious About Espn Green Room

He did a poor job articulating his point....but he is right that if the advertising about big important college games is come see guys play that are going to be in the NBA shortly. There is a negative connotation about college basketball that it is in some way not enough and that it can't stand on it's own for entertainment purposes. That the most interesting thing about the games is that a couple of these dudes are going to play in the professional league in the future and that's why you should be interested in watching the game. Not because college basketball is in of itself passionate and interesting and full of pageantry and the large home crowds are wayyyyy more engaged in the game then NBA crowds ever are.

I dont agree often with him but it does seem awkward they should leave that out in this opinion.

Couldn't watch the video at first and just read the article and laughed my ass off at "dadgum"

Roy's just pissed because he and Self represent the arm of college basketball that want to hold kids back and keep them in school as long as possible under the guise of "improving" and "loving the college experience." The more promotion there is of as singular focus on the league, the more likely it becomes that all the fringe NBA kids they've been holding back will actually leave UNC and Kansas.

Oh he's upset about something? I'm upset about their 20+ years of cheating and the NCAA and ESPN looking the other way because of their ties to UNC. I hope a meteorite hits the Dean Dome
College basketball should be upset about UNC,the sports media world should be upset about UNC, someone should be holding the NCAA's feet to the fire about UNC,yet here they go on their merry way playing basketball and thumbing their nose at the rest of the world.

As long as Coach K can bitch at the refs and have his t.v. spots while pretending to be something he is not all is right in the college universe, except for that damned Calipari guy down at Kentucky,he keeps winning games and bringing in #1 classes he is ruining college basketball

yeah that's why i watch basketball

for the crowd
Have you been to an NBA game in person? Because I have and there is a world of difference between watching an NBA regular season game and a college regular season game like the one we are going to be playing tomorrow in Rupp or Allen Field House? College game atmosphere > NBA game atmosphere.

I just don't care anymore. Nothing UNC does and says matters. I've even lost a lot of respect for the University as a whole because it's a part of it to. They just aren't in my world anymore, even if they do win the national title. I sure as heck won't watch it unless they play UK. I refuse to watch them except in that case from here on. It's about the only protest I can make. I will read nothing about them except what I see here among UK fans, and ignore them in the polls. As far as I'm concerned OU's #1 in both because they just don't exist anymore to me. I don't know how to say it much more emphatically than that.

He doesn't have the best of luck

For the most part, he's not talking about the advertising of the game leading up to it. He's talking about how the players are presented during the actual broadcasts. Basically, the small mini-segments and graphics components that are part of every broadcast. Similar to Jimmy's Jet, or whatever the hell that thing was called, when discussing tournament bids for the SEC.

The fact is, if you're watching an LSU game, then Ben Simmons is the story. And the story of Ben Simmons is that he will be in the NBA next year and likely the #1 pick. That's not something ESPN has manufactured. It's simply the reality of things now.

Anchoring on his lottery draft status is an easy and effective way to communicate to an audience the nature of his talent. No different than how they'd mention multiple times per game that Anthony Davis was a potential number one pick.

At the very least though, I think Roy Williams has disqualified himself from lecturing someone on what college basketball should be about.

Well why don't he ask the president of ESPN? The same UNC Alum that has protected his CHEATING PROGRAM for the last 3 years!!

The implosion that is UNC is a spectacle unto itself. They invent new ways to humiliate themselves every day. They have so completely lost themselves that they no longer even have a moral compass. They're just adrift and soulless. Somebody drive a stake through their hearts and get it over with.

that is exactly why is he pissed. Roy Williams is still asking kids what can they do for Carolina, not what can Carolina do for you.

The future looks pretty bleak for Carolina's recruiting and Roy knows that if the selling point of games is to talk about NBA prospects, then no one is going to be talking about Carolina.

And loyal UNC fans are gonna turn on him wondering why.

Absolutely. I personally hope Roy stays at UNC for 5 or 6 more years. He's going to run them into the ground. They have a mediocre class coming in and they'll be losing Paige and Johnson at minimum, and potentially Jackson or Meeks as well.

The UNC brand is encountering its worst days. UNC is in a "feast or famine" mode this year when it comes to winning the national title. They know it might be a long, long time before it happens again if they don't do it this year, and they're already on a six year streak without a Final Four.

That someone will come in the form of whichever team takes them down in March/April. This is UNC's last chance a title for a long, long time, and everyone in the Tar Heel state knows it.

Surreal to watch Roy pretend nothing ever happened and cast UNC as what's right with college bb .

Kind of like that scene in Shawshank when the Warden talks to Andy like nothing ever happened, like he just didn't murder Tommy in the court yard.

Ole Roys clutch is slipping. He needs to be thinking about retirement.

True. Roy is the one who convinced Hansbrough, Barnes, Henson, and a host of others that they needed more time in Chapel Hill. He might be the most disingenuous coach college basketball has ever known. He's basically the archetype for the hypocritical church-going southern asshat, who spends his time as a deacon in his church community, and then behind closed doors proceeds to cuss out the people he loathes.

ESPN does seem to be a ' Forward thinking ' outfit. They want to rush things up, and be the 1st to put it out there. Sort of like Wal-mart putting out Christmas stock in October, before Halloween and Thanksgiving.
What's the big hurry ? When they talk about Ben Simmons, it has nothing to do with LSU, and making the NCAA tournament, it's always he will be the Number 1 pick in the NBA draft, which is 5 months away. There's a lot of water that will go under the bridge way before that event !

Oh, so you're unhappy with the amount of time ESPN spends talking about the green room huh, well, okay Roy, we can cut that out of our broadcasts but we're going to need to fill that time with something. Do you have any ideas on what we could fill that time with? You may not but I have an EXCELLENT idea. We could fill it with short snippets of the details of how kids didn't go to class and were given passing grades in college throughout the 90's and 2000's.
How do you feel about the green room now Roy. Okay thanks.

This is the problem with college basketball,we are shoving players out the door before they ever play their first game.I understand being in a college a year and chasing your dream but for the year that a player is in college focus on what he does there and what his team does while he is there.

Most of us have come to accept OAD and understand the why and how as far as players are concerned, they need to go when their draft stock is the highest(Ulis is a prime example needs to go this year) Making the entire year about nothing but draft position devalues the college basketball regular season, conference championships and the NCAAT. As you say no one cares where Simmons is playing basketball,or what his team does. When Simmons is gone it won't even be a footnote where he played his one year of college ball.

ESPN has to push something to drive viewership - when your 1:00pm Saturday afternoon game is LSU/Mississippi St - promoting Ben Simmons as the next Kevin Garnett (or whoever) is a great way to drive viewership plus with the OAD is a "catch him while you can" kinda thing.
