I had to look back because I was super young and it looks like Hershel ran away with it. He had 525 first place votes to Elway’s 139. Total points were 1926 to 1231. I’m sure it would have been closer than it was, but would Elway leading a 6-5 Stanford team instead of a 5-6 Stanford team have won with a win over a 6-5 Cal team?Hershel Walker narrowly squeaked by John Elway as the Heisman winner that Fall.
Many think had Elway’s Stanford team won that game, he would have won the Heisman.
The Walker info is not entirely true. He was not drafted out of college because he was already in the USFL, who allowed college players to enter their league a year earlier than the NFL. He played 3 years in the USFL and the Cowboys took a gamble that the USFL was going to shut down, so they wanted his rights of it did…and picked him in the 5th round of the 1985 NFL draft….3 years after he left college. He would have been a top 2 or 3 pick in the 1983 draft had he not gone the USFL route. Both Walker and Elway had great NFL careers. Winning a Heisman notwithstanding, when Walker came out he was Drafted in the 5th round. 114th, and when Elway came out, he was the number 1 pick, played his whole career with the same team and owns half of Denver. Not a knock on Walker, in the pros, a great QB is a franchise player, not so much a running back.
Yes. Same with Bo Jackson. He was such a terrible pro prospect that the Raiders were able to get him on their team by drafting him in the 7th round. Both Walker and Elway had great NFL careers.
