Louisville, KY.
This was a great game, and we stayed in it despite the refs in the second half. I have NO doubt if we play them again in the Tournament, we will kick their a$$.
The one question I have though is, why was Briscoe in during the last 3 or 4 minutes instead of Hawkins or Matthews. Self had him fouled a couple of times, in the closing minutes, knowing he was not a good foul shooter. I believe he hit his first four and then missed the next 8.
If I remember correctly, Kansas beat Memphis in the NCAA Championship when Memphis could not hit their fouls in the last two minutes of the game.

We needed to keep scoring too and Hawkins nor Mathews is a threat . Hawkins was being left wide open and he couldn't hit from the perimeter so you don't even get a free throw attempt with him . It also hurts Tyler and Murray because they can sag off Hawkins , Briscoe is a threat to drive that is healthier for others .

It's a difficult situation. Briscoe is probably our third best player, and definitely our best defender. But in tight games, getting fouled should be a positive; it's almost like a turnover with Briscoe.

Because Briscoe is the all around better player.....I'm sure the walk on from Cynthiana can hit free throws, doesn't mean he should have checked in the game

All around better yes but he simply cannot be in the game in the closing minutes. His missed free throws to start OT set the tone.

OP's question did match the headline. More with someone's thoughts on specific UK players playing time.

He missed 2 free throws in overtime when the game was tied and missed the front end of a 1 and 1 when Kansas was up 2. He makes those and all of a sudden its tied or UK is up 2 and it's a whole different ball game, instead Kentucky found themselves down 4 or 5. That is what decided the game in overtime.

IMO Hawkins should have never been in this game . I cringed when he was taking those outside shots . The kid has been hurt for a month and THIS is the game you put him in at crunch time . What the heck was wrong with Mulder ?

The game unfolded pretty much like I expected. Our guards were better than theirs. Their baseline was better than ours. We took the game into OT, but we lost because we took a lot of bad shots in the 2nd half and we got whipped by their bigs. I just have to laugh when I see a game like this blamed on officiating. AF is a tough place to play, but no place in the country is tougher than Rupp Arena. Funny, I never hear a Kentucky fan complain when we get calls in our favor at RA. So all the crying about officials this morning seems nuts. We got beat yesterday for the same reason we took the other 4 losses. We don't score or defend very well inside the paint. Kansas outrebounded Kentucky 42-31, but I haven't seen anyone mention that. I guess people don't understand what happens when you get your butt whipped on the backboards. This is a good team, and other teams will dread drawing us in March. But this is probably not a NC team, and it isn't because of officiating or Jamal Murray's defense. LOL. People just have to face facts. Labissiere was a recruiting miss, and Derek Willis isn't a savior. This stuff happens sometimes.

I am glad they missed a lot of their free throws or this game would have got out of hand, but I would have been embarrassed if I was Kansas by the huge free throw difference that is a little more than home cooking. I rarely point to the free throw differential but that was out of hand.

Would like to have seen Mulder get a chance to play as well. Why recruit a kid if you don't think he can play? Needed another shooter last night against the triangle and 2.

LOL if Hawkins hits the two wide open jumpers if Willis makes his if Briscoe make 3 more free throws if we just chase Seldon and don't let him beat us....so many things. Nobody has anything to say negative if we win.

Great insight there . Why do we have a fan board anyway ?

Briscoe needs to sit period. If Willis was at the line instead of Briscoe we win.

It is pitiful a guard is shooting 35% at the FT line anyways.

He went 2-8 after making his first four. He must sit the last 2 minutes of a close game.

or he needs to be out there now so, ideally, he gets over the yips to some degree and you can play him in those situations later, when the outcome actually matters

cal doesn't see his role as parachuting in and saving his players from themselves. he's not going to junk an opponent to win a game in january like self did last night

Cal has said himself that his guys have to prove to him that they can make plays down the stretch in a close game. Briscoe and Lee haven't proven they can do that and their opportunities are running out. So yes he'll probably continue to leave them in but the game last night was a big game and it wouldn't surprise me if those two are sitting next to him the next time we're in that situation.

Did Cal ever say why Murray was subbed out in OT ? The group of people I was watching the game with were all shocked he wasn't in there .

I agree it wasn't just the officiating that beat us. They outrebounded us by 11 for the game but by 6 in the 1st half when we had a 6 point lead. So they were +5 on the boards in the 2nd half and OT and they outscored us by 12. So it wasn't necessarily the rebounding that propelled them.

In the 1st half we had 17 fgm and Kansas had 15. For the game it was UK 33 fgm and KU 26. Free throws in the 1st half were UK 8-11 and KU 8-12. The 2nd half and OT free throws UK was 5-11 and KU was 22-35. Hum, that's quite a disparity. They made 3 more threes than we did for the game, not that big of a difference.

So while we still had an opportunity to win the game in regulation the free throw disparity in the 2nd half and OT is astounding. Were they all bad calls? No! But you mean to tell me the team fighting for the lead most of the 2nd half wasn't fouling at least close to what we were being called for? Were there any benefit of the doubt calls that we could have gotten that they did? There is no reasonable explanation to that free throw disparity in one half of basketball when the previous half was so clearly even.

We shouldn't have left Seldon open near the end of regulation and Tyler picked a bad time to have a turnover but those plays don't mean a heel of beans without the significant difference in free throws. It doesn't matter if you see it that way or not. That WAS the difference in the game. Occasionally we do get a favorable whistle at Rupp but nothing like I saw last night. I hate blaming officials for losses also but with the free throw disparity in only one half it can't be over-looked.
