Grade Coach Mingione

2021 Season: D
Overall tenure: C-
Time to Move on: A

The overall tenure was almost a D. But, 2017 was a great year and in all reality, should have made the tournament in 2018. 2019 and 2021 has been an epic failure. And last year may have been worse than 2019 if not for Covid.

2017 A
2018 D
2019 F
2020 F (would have been a bad year)
2021 C- (picked last but beat expectations)
Picked last by the coaches poll though. There’s some myths I’m gonna dispel one is that this wasn’t a talented team or was a last place caliber team. This is the best roster Mingione will ever have here. Schujtz is a great college player / hitter, Rhodes a pre season top 3 rounder, collete a 5th year bonafide masher , Anu a PG All America. Drafted twice , Kessler , Shelby a PG All American also , cam hill was guy that also was thought well enough of to okay on the cape.
They underachieved this year not overachieved,

the reason they were Sec coaches poll Projected last place is because the other coaches despise Mingione and knowing it was a hot seat year for him , knowing he was playing for an extension. said F-U Mingione by picking them to finish last in the SEC. no way in the hell is that a last place team in the SEC , no chance.
Coaches support other coaches they like and respect. When I saw they voted Mingione last place knowing that every respectable vote of confidence would count and matter to him , they took the opportunity to try and bury him. For personal reasons nothing to do with competition. He is despised by other coaches in the conferance.

By personal I mean that they know he is a fraud, they know he is all baloney, all a gimmick, they would laugh in his face if he tried all that cornball stuff with them that he pours on in the media and to the public.

Interesting take on other coaches perception of CNM. I remember the UF series, I think in 2017 Coach O’Sullivan came to the top of the dugout steps and yelled at Zach Reks to tuck in his jersey tighter just before the first pitch. Obviously fearing an easy HBP. I immediately looked for CNM to at least say something..... crickets from the UK bench. I was very disappointed to say the least.

Gamesmanship, or whatever you want to call it. But, gusty (not surprising) from O’Sullivan. Always stuck with me, CNM didn’t react in some way.

A good HC would have got thrown out over that.
At least one that had his players back.
As a coach you don’t EVER let the other teams coach talk to your players in that manner.

NM is not SEC material and should be dismissed when he arrives back in Lexington today.

I don’t recall that but that’s a similar reaction that we all saw/heard at the end of that Saturday night Florida game. Mingione just doesn’t have any fire in his belly.

But, our sackless AD is more likely to extend him again than to fire him.

He gets a D from me. And that isn't enough to bring him back for another season. He had one good season coaching a team built by someone else. He has been a disappointment pretty much ever since. Time to move on and get someone in here who can recruit, develop and motivate. We'll never be anything better than mediocre with Mingione in charge.

I’ve said this in a couple threads already but I’m to the point I don’t blame Mingione for the mess. I blame Barnhart for letting this fiasco continue.

That’s pitiful tbh

I give Ming credit for the super regional in 2017. It's our one and only one, so he deserves credit for getting it done.

With that said, he has done NOTHING to build on that. He has a showplace new park and a super on which to build a great recruiting pitch and he has squandered it.

I don't see next year getting any better. To quote Jeremy foley, "What will happen eventually must be done now." I'd cut the cord now and start anew.

I really think you have to let Mingione go but I’m concerned Mitch doesn’t have the competency to hire someone better. Barnhart has been more lucky than good.

Firing Mingione is addition by subtraction, being “nice” dosnt matter if it’s all an act it if your actions contradict your “ Christian values “ and “ family “ atmosphere. The “ nice “ things Nick does is for show. Did he treat Kessler nice or fair ? Or B3N ?

I agree. He needs to go, IMO. As others said he had a nice first season with a team he didn’t construct & has underwhelmed (to put it nicely) ever since. NM has done nothing to earn that extension. But, Mitch is in the business of handing out ridiculous perks & bad contracts. I’m happy with Stoops on the football side but his deal is dumb & one sided, as well. He gets a one year extension every time he has an average season & wins 7 games. The buyout on that contract is insane, too, & nobody owes UK a penny if Stoops leaves before his contract expires. Cal gets a lifetime contract with a huge buyout & zero protection against him leaving early. Gillispie didn’t even have a formal contract; it was written out on a cocktail napkin. Mitch acts like he’s at Prairie View or something, having to go way overboard to lure a coach to Lexington & the vast majority of his contracts benefit no one but the coach while compromising UK.

I do not know enough about the season to give a grade. I am very knowledgeable about baseball, but it's unfair to grade anyone really. It does seem like we likely led the league in pitches thrown. Our pitching was just not very reliable, and that is demoralizing when you help put your defense to sleep. Tough year. Close, but not able to get over the hump in many cases and disappointing to see already one heading out the door...oh well...the SEC and being at a northern school like UK is not the easiest situation. I do like Coach Mingione--his heart is very much in the right place and he is a good man, and I know this from multiple personal experiences. You'd better have some really good pitching to compete favorably in the SEC. Need some more like Sean Hjelle.

I agree being in a colder climate puts you at a disadvantage but Michigan and Indiana are far more north and they are successful. Louisville is in the same boat we’re in yet they are a top 10 team annually.

The one positive I can say about Mitch is he has improved the quality of the athletic department since he has been here AND he’s not a basketball only AD like we’ve normally had. I’m concerned if he retires we will get basketball only DeWayne Peevy, which would be a disaster.

Getting DeWayne Peevy as the athletic director will be another CM Newton disaster. It’ll turn into nothing basketball again and that just may be the final push for me to give up on UK athletics. I cannot stand to watch basketball.

Don't agree if it's Peevy. Thought he would stay around until MB left, now I'm not so sure he'll get the job whenever there is a change.

I disagree.

-The UK football program is in the best shape it has been in my lifetime (I'm in my 40s). And, it's not even close. We have an actual program with an identity. We regularly beat all of our peer programs (MSU, USC, Vandy, UL, Mizzou). In fact, we dominate most of them at the moment. The only real black mark is the lack of wins against UT and the fact that we don't beat the biggest of big boys very often.

-Calapari won a national title and his results here over the long haul are outstanding. I don't have a problem with his deal. In fact, if he has another year this year like last year, he will walk away and won't need to be chased.

-Mitch has brought some excellent coaches onto campus - namely Skinner and Lawson. Our swimming and diving teams are doing great. Our tennis teams are nationally ranked. He has a few misses (Gillispie, Ming), but his track record overall is excellent.

-The main issues that Mitch has are baseball and women's basketball. Both are clearly in decline. I don't think these have been handled well by Mitch (this latest extension defies belief), but I have no issue with him finding a replacement.

This will be an unpopular opinion but I’ll give him a pass on the women’s basketball team. He had to make a decision in a hurry. Now, promoting Elzy to a contract may be a rushed decision, that’s a debate for another day. But I hope with her staff changes she can right the ship. But a change needs to happen with the baseball program.

I’m happy with Stoops & Cal, too. I’m also in my 40s. I thought they were both good hires. But, the contracts are bad, IMO. If they decline you are stuck with them unless you wanna pay thru the nose. But, if they decide to leave at any time they are free to do so with zero repercussions. Both situations leave UK in a tough spot. Too one sided, IMO, & comes off as desperate.

Cals contract is a joke. Which doesn’t really bother me because I can’t stand basketball but I know what it could potentially do to the entire athletic department. I would be curious how the other contracts in the department are worded. Take Rachel Lawsons for example. If another team offers her a job, what if any safeguards are there for Kentucky.

We would owe Cal something in the neighborhood of $50M if he had been fired after last season. But, he can leave at any time & nobody owes UK a penny. Stoops’ buyout was around $16M last time I checked a cpl years ago. And, I’m fine with incentives but a one year extension for 7 wins is a little much, IMO. Maybe Mitch isn’t so generous with other sports. I really only follow basketball, football & baseball so I have no idea about Lawson’s contract. But, nothing would surprise me, TBH.

Anf yet still treat Barney as a saint, because all the other AD's said, "Yeah! Barney's da' man!" And Br'er Rabbit said, "Don' throw me in 'dat briar patch!" They also tout about how he is the best AD we ever had. And I'm the tallest midget. MPAI!

I’m not a big fan of Barnhart but in all honesty he probably is the best AD, at least during my lifetime. That’s not really a compliment since we’ve predominantly had ex-basketball guys that only gave a crap about basketball. That’s why I hope DeWayne Peevy never sets foot on campus as our AD.

Personally, I'll disagree with you here. Think Barnhart has been very solid. He's not perfect or anything, but he's improved pretty much everything in his time and he seems like a complete AD. There have been plenty of other really big schools who have had a lot worse. I'll give him flak when I think he's wrong, as he's not infallible, but I give him credit for being way more than basketball and even basketball and football oriented.

Why did Mitch give Mingione a contract extension so early? He did the same thing with Elsy after the first few games, then their season immediately went downhill.

The thought process was it would help out with recruiting. I feel it was ill advised and now we may be stuck with it.
