Good Interview with Gregg Doyel on Tom Crean's Fate

On CBS sportsline, the AD comes out in support of Clappy. I think that unless the fans show up at the athletic dept with torches and pitchforks, he is back for one more year. He has not been so bad that they are willing to pay him $12 million. I know that I agree with the AD. I think he is a great fit for the Hoosiers.

I think when the AD is talking about how he isn't going to fire you it's probably time to dust off the old resume.

Just a few weeks ago the IU fans were pimping Crean for COY, now they want him gone. That's a short trip from the penthouse to the outhouse. Fickle bunch over there.

The big question is how good of a job is Indiana? What should the expectations be, and who could they realistically get as a coach?

Not popular on Peegs' board.

You know Creaning's recruiting tactics don't sound any different than those coaches over in Louisville.

And his coaching sounds alot like BCG; playing walkons over scholarship players.

I know UK wouldn't tolerate 7 years of that.

I think what many here do. He's got one more year to make some fairly miraculous things happen or he's gone. The buyout goes down substantially this summer, and next. The comments recently from IU were just talk to justify one more year.

I SMH yet again at those who rail against Cal. Fairly sure Cal has had an extra scholly in at least a couple of his seasons at UK. "Creaning" is low, especially to a senior who was there for you when you won 6 games.

Of course I, like some other's who go back to the early days of the internet when IU fans were the most arrogant on earth, am loving every bit of this.

When your AD acknowledges your buyout is too large, that can't be a good sign

Of course he's going to back you - he's basically saying he can't afford not to.

That said, I'd say he's doing all he can within the bounds of professionalism to let Crean know, and to encourage the public to pressure on Crean, that its time for a separation.

If they're waiting on the buyout to go down, my only question is whether or not they want to have a coaching change right in the middle of the summer. I suppose they could have their man in place to transition immediately after, but unless they are dead set on getting rid of Crean or are sure they have someone like Brad Stevens in place, I'd look for Clappy returning next year.

Casual Gamer Reed refers to him as Tom Cream. Cracks me up every time he says it for some reason

I can't imagine Crean is just hanging around waiting for the buyout though.

If he has any gumption at all he's looking for a soft landing

Most of the top threads on Peegs are about either firing Crean or who they should go after. I find it quite amusing that they finally realized he is horrible after only 7 years. Has anyone ever been able to ride the coat tails of someone else more than Crean did D Wade? If not for Wade being as great as he was and making Crean look so good you have to think old Clappy would probably be coaching at a Jr college somewhere.

^^^This. July 1st is when the buyout goes down to $7.5M. I can't imagine an AD who would "negotiate" an extension (which by itself was crazy irresponsible) but have the buyout reduction dates occur in the middle of summer. A very awkward time for a new coach. After all, he has to leave his present school then too, screwing them over.

Of course everything is negotiable. So it wouldn't surprise me if some deal is reached whereby Crean is let go sooner and receives some kind of deferred compensation.

Or they keep him another year and make the move then. Which I can't say I'd be too upset about!

The Indiana AD was pretty clear about Crean's job next year. This article is Doyle's good work in word craft far more than it is an omen. Crean will be back next year. Reading the article where the IU AD was talking about Crean being fired, it became very clear the real reason is the ridiculous buyout clause in Crean's contract. The AD talked about that at length in an effort to "explain away" that clause much like Bush tried to explain away WMD. But any fool that read the article could feel the pain that the buyout clause has inflicted into the IU program. Bottom line IU have gotten them into a contractual agreement with failure. Holy Bejesus that AD is worse than ours.

It is hysterical to think that a coach can be as bad as Crean and get an $11M buyout if he is terminated. I am trying to process the logic behind giving anyone a buyout clause that basically says, "If you utterly fail, we will pay you millions to get rid of you."

Glass quote from November 2012 when Crean's contract extension was announced:

"Tom Crean has done an absolutely phenomenal job bringing Indiana University back to its rightful place as one of the elite basketball programs in the country," Glass said in a statement. "His energy, integrity, ability, passion, industry, vision and commitment are unparalleled."

These fools lost their minds after the "wat" shot. Ironically if we hadn't knocked them out of the S16 in March 2012, Crean probably makes a final 4 and isn't on the hot seat right now. I know a lot of people talk about wanting Crean to stay, but after the way he encouraged the atrocious behavior in ASS hall, I would take a bit of satisfaction knowing that we contributed to his demise.

Can we start a letter writing campaign to the AD to show our support? Keep Tom Crean!!!

LMAO !!! I love it , you just can't make this stuff up !!! I will say there are in the spot they belong though !!

The situation at IU reminds me of when rival fans (including many Hoosier fans) and national media used to stop by here all the time and tell us what a great coach Tubby is and how some of us were out of our minds for wanting to get rid of him.

I got so sick of people telling us how great tubby was, lol! Our enemies loved tubby because he presented zero threat!

I heard on a sports radio program that the buyout would be closer to 20 Mill when include severance packages for Crean and staff

If he gets Blackmon again next year, he's a lock to stay. But they won't be any better next year.
