Golhke: 6 for 17 from 3 tonight in a losing effort.

Of course. These dudes that show out against Kentucky aren’t good or Cinderellas or March madness surprises. It’s Kentucky basketball and its failure. Like somebody else said before. It’s like a make-a-wish….“Come be a star for a day against Kentucky”

I used to believe in the magic also. That guys just had the game of their life because it was Kentucky. Until I grew up and realized it was all just a big fairytale.
I dont know man, there aren't many open shots here that weren't caused by our guys being lazy.

I would not say that we guarded him at all. At times we did. At other times we ran by him as he was hitting another 3.
Go watch the video of all 10 of his 3s above. I dont know how in the world you call those shots unguarded.

He definitely made some of those. But, too often we ran by him because we weren't playing close D.
He only had three open shots against us. Two were Reed falling asleep and sagging off him and the third was Reeves falling badly for a pump fake.

I think UK guarded him closely most of our game. Went over screens, switched out on him, etc...There were 2 wide open threes when he got lost in open court/loose ball sets. I think the difference in NC St vs. UK gameplan was..

1. Our bigs never bumped Golhke running off screens. We let him run free of contact most of the night. NC St stayed connected to him and their guys guarding the screeners got a bump on Gohlke
2. The biggest issue...we choose to put Reed and DJ on him in first half. Then later in 2nd half we went with a longer Reeves. NC State put longer kids on him vs. shorter guards. Why Cal didn't start with Reeves and didn't try longer players in Adou/Edwards....was another fundamental Cal coaching mistake.

I'm with you dude. I pointed out yesterday how peculiar it is that we got paired with the red-hot 14-seed this year, and the best 15-seed in 2022, and was told it was just our defense making them play well. Our defense stinks but if we had drawn a different 14-seed, we would have advanced. Luck of the draw I guess.

I watched that. Firstly, those are basic defensive concepts. There is no reality where a college coach doesn't know that. Secondly, it doesn't matter what concepts you're using if there's a hand an inch from the ball every time the guy shoots.

Like I said above, only 3 of his makes were open shots and they were the players' fault. The other 7 were heavily contested. 4 were so heavily contested they probably could have been and-1s.

Our big guys never hedged out on the picks, or even tried to double on the catch, Reed gambled multiple times and got cooked ect, ect. Just bad simple defensive concepts everywhere. Adjustments could have been made so he doesn't even touch the ball. All out fail. No defending it.

What about this team's defense makes you think another strategy would have been more affective? There's more than one way to skin a cat. The vast majority of his shots were heavily contested. Using another strategy to make the shot just as contested doesn't matter. Reed gambling and getting cooked and Reeves falling for pump fakes aren't on the coaches. The shots were contested, he just made them.

We were running by him. We played soft and he made us pay.

Don't let anyone blow smoke up your ass. 9 of these were barely contested because the defender was either late and trailing or fell for a ball fake. Dude above thinks because a player jumped in the air it's a contested shot. These Cal honks(I dont think thats even right, they are just contrarians) are so blindly faithful they don't care about actual reality and create their own.

1st 3, not contested
2nd 3, Sheppard late, no basketball person would tell you that was contested
3rd 3, deep 3, not a contest, can't do much on that one tho. that was 5 feet behind the arc
4th 3, Wagner is late, not much of a contest other than DJ throwing his hands up praying it doesnt go in
5th 3, Reeves wayyy late. Easily ball faked. not contested
6th 3, Reed contested that
7th 3, not contested
8th 3, Reeves very late, not contested
9th 3, Reeves, late again, futile jump, not contested
10th 3, Reeves late, falls for a ball fake, Reed jumps at Gohlke, not a contested shot.

Dude hit 9 uncontested or late contested 3s. Highly contested is just a flat out lie.
