Getting more shots

Watching Alabama and then Vandy one big difference was the number of shots taken. A huge advantage of Kentucky over most teams of course is the obvious size of the team. Although stats reflect decent offensive percentage, they are a bit misleading because half court sets are not that high a percentage. The higher stats come from second chance offensive rebounds and fast breaks from turnovers.

I like that the team is trying to get a better inside game going but against Bama the inside players got points more from receiving passes after posting whereas against Vandy, the big men were trying to dribble drive (and having the ball stripped, blocked, mishandled, etc.). It also seems (and I say seems because maybe some things do have to be attributed to another teams defense), that our big men like Towns and Johnson don't have a quick first step and you can see the move coming a mile away. Or they are not sure whether to pass or try to take the shot. It is one thing that I observe with Okafor is he doesn't hesitate and gets a lot of dunks, or easy shots right at the basket even when posting outside the paint.

Cal has wanted more shots and I see where this is really on target. More shots with this team means more chances to get second shots, etc. Lee was amazing against Vandy in this respect but there were many times where no one was in position for an offensive rebound because the big men were dribbling slowly trying to improve their position.

Looking at the South Carolina roster we should have again a huge advantage inside.

I'm not here to criticize anything Cal does, but I will say this: if you're a coach who wants "more shots", then you need to encourage your guys to take the first good one (and live with the mistakes and bricks that come with that). That's just how how you do that. If you keep passing up decent shots because you might (or might not) get a better one later in the shot clock, then you're probably never going to get to a point where your players are taking more shots.
