Does the possibility we don’t have a QB of equal potential in place to follow Will Levis, in any way make our search for our next OC more difficult? Maybe I’m just sweating the small stuff, but we seemingly have all other pieces in place. What we don’t have yet, is someone to continue the level of QB play we have with Will. Is this a legitimate concern or am I overthinking things?

Doubt it. It would be nice but I assume they want to recruit their own guy. Plus, whoever we hire is getting a big promotion and pay raise.
We have Will one more year. If our new OC has to recruit the next stud QB, we’re looking at, at the least, a two year gap. Unless we can bring in a transfer. That’s how I see it playing out.

People are hung up on us not having a QB to replace Will. Well, a few things. Beau Allen has been in the system for a while, so I would hope he gets first dibs. Second, we don't know much about the kids we just signed until we see them in action as well. Third, the transfer market has worked decently for us going all the way back to Johnson. (minus the Joey Gatewood experience). Point is, we always managed to find someone to fill the role. and with the transfer portal becoming more and more of a commodity paired with our ascending status as a program, there is no reason to think we couldn't land a high quality transfer on par with Levis or better in the future.

We do have 2 4 stars behind Will(Beau and that walk on from Iowa).

and like you said, the portal. I think the portal will be really big for QB’s, especially if we keep having turnover with OC’s.

Good post, Spuds. Nothing against Beau Allen, but I think a transfer is our next QB after Will.

Given that all signs appear that Stoops is about bringing in guys that run NFL schemes that fits Coen's resume and the Rob Calabrese Jets QB is a target apparently..

1. I think it boils down to UK can pay a ton more for OC job than QB coach for NFL team. Those guys probably make 200-300k per year. UK was paying Coen 1.1 M (and Liam probably didn't even get much if any raise to be OC for Rams)....So Stoops can double their salary easily.
2. The future from an QB coach in NFL to OC in SEC team....pretty good opportunity to bounce right back in NFL OC gig running a NFL offense at UK...or get to a college coaching gig if you hit it off bigtime....and then the big bucks start raining down.
3. You have Will Levis day 1....which is huge. I don't get why Beau Allen is not looked upon higher by fans. He's a 4 star rated QB and he has time to build up his phsyique.....Besides, even if Allen isn't the man...you have this handy-dandy transfer portal you get to surf on for talent.

I don't think the QB talent behind Levis will really matter one iota to the next OC.

K — I focus mostly on your 3rd point. Having so many skill position players in place, especially at QB, has to be enticing for the next OC. But that’s just one season. I haven’t seen enough from Allen to think he’s the guy. I grew up in Lexington and lived 40 years in that area, so I’d love to see a Lexington kid take the reigns. However, I think the transfer portal will produce our next big time QB. Stoops has mastered that.

If Levis and the offense has another good year this year and if Levis gets drafted let's say in the first 4 rounds (certainly not out of the realm of possibility), I would think transfer QBs would look long and hard at coming to UK to be tutored in an NFL scheme with a good OL, good RBs and good WR/TE corps. Allen should and will have his chances as will Sheron. If, for some reason, neither are 'the guy', I think we'll have several options either through recruiting or transfer. I mean, this system made Jared Goff look like a Pro Bowler. I'm thinking we can get Allen, Sheron, the walkon, recent recruits and/or transfers to make this offense pretty potent.

The only thing I've seen from Allen in the very limited snaps he's taken is that he doesn't have near the arm talent as Levis. However, I don't perceive this offense as requiring a cannon to be effective. If Allen (or whomever) can quickly read the defense and make an accurate throw to the right guy, he can be pretty good in this offense. Whoever is under center may necessitate a change to the various plays that are called but many of our route trees have multiple levels and don't require a 40+ yard laser. We'll be fine. I think.

Yeah, I’m not big on Allen’s arm strength. Especially after 2 seasons of Will’s cannon.

The Johnson guy from the Eagles looks like the perfect fit. Anxious to see what Stoops does.

I’m skeptical we have Levis’ replacement on roster. Not sure Allen’s arm strength is good enough, Wade I believe won’t end up at QB, and just don’t know what to expect from Sheron. Thankfully the portal seems like a great option for QBs

I think an incoming OC would love to be able to choose his style of quarterback from the transfer portal. A lot more appealing than being saddled with a returning starter that doesn’t fit the scheme you want to run . That said, I haven’t given up on our back up quarterbacks.

He’s a four star athlete not a four star quarterback. He’ll be a contributor here but not at QB
He reminds me a bit of Matt Roarke. Roarke played QB in HS but wound up at WR, then we all know what happened when he was forced into playing QB for a game.

There is absolutely no reason to think that . The transfer kid was ranked about where Beau was coming out of high school and he certainly didn’t do a single thing at Iowa for you you to be impressed with. How can you say that without even seeing the transfer take a snap ? There is ZERO reason to believe a kid our staff took as a walk-on is better than any of the quarterbacks we have on scholarship.
I don't think he was even referring to the Iowa transfer, I think he was stating we could pick up a QB in the portal after this year that would immediately be the starter like Levis.

Levis is awesome but I’m not sure betting on getting a transfer as good as him every other year is a good strategy. Wish I felt better about the young QBs we already have.

UK like most schools aren't like Alabama and true blue bloods, in that they don't have stud QBs waiting in the wings. The reality is, in today's market, QBS don't wait around 2-3 years to play, they find some where they can play an to transfer to via the portal. Levis is the perfect example of that and probably something UK will continue to utilize moving forward. Most schools have to recruit and develop and you would expect anyone we hire to continue to do so. That is why a guy like the Calabrese is important, not only can he be an OC, he can also develop QBs in theory at least.

We'll see. Has more SEC-level size & athletic ability than our 2 Kentucky HS products in our QB room. Came from an extremely high level HS program.

He's gonna get every chance to stick at QB because if we screw him over we not only lose him to Portal but his borderline 5 star DE brother as well. The days of getting a signature by promising to be a QB but then 1st day of camp being sent to WR or CB room are dead & gone.

I was not referring to the Iowa kid. I hope he suddenly blows up, but the Iowa fans who post here aren’t very high on him.

Every other year? Definitely not. But maybe as an immediate option to replace Levis, for a new OC, I can see that happening if we don’t lock down a stud recruit in the next few months. For whatever reason, that is the one position we don’t recruit well.

Maybe. And I hope so. But we’re all talking about running a pro-style offense going forward, not tailoring some read option offense around an athletic quarterback with a raw arm. It’s more difficult but with good QB development maybe it’s possible.

There are tons of QBs that transfer.

Nobody has to worry about having or not having one on your roster ready to go.

There are plenty ready, willing and able to transfer.
