1. I had lived for a week thinking the game was at 3:30. Soooo, I made my group
late, missing Eastern’s block and score.
Maybe the whole team had a thirty minute lapse.
2. EKU’s Quarterback.
Find out his class level and if he has a year left, snag him in the portal. A heady game by a kid with talent. The second EKU touchdown burned White’s blitz almost as though the EKU Coaches knew it was coming . . . how many of their coaches have worked in Lexington?
3. Leary.
It’s like he’s either dropping it in a paint bucket from 30 yards, or not very close at all. From the end of the second quarter until the last drive, he was dialed-in and made many beautiful throws.
4. O-line: maybe the whole team gets a C minus for the lackadaisical performance, but some Leary completions were after 5 seconds in a clean pocket. Largely good
protection throughout.
5. D-line. Had some moments, but many EKU completions were after 5 seconds in a clean pocket. I hoped for and expected more penetration from our front 3/4.
6. Davis. Nice TD catch, and solid running, against a tougher than expected FCS opponent.
7. Tavion Robinson. For the first time since mid-season, last year, the third Major Threat among our wide receivers emerged and showed out. If he and BB and Key can maintain this level of play, we should continue scoring points. He had the hot hand, and Levis/Coen wisely rode him.
8. Defense. The name I had expected to hear at the top of the heap has had a quiet start. DJack has been solid, but the “big play” he had lived on for three seasons has alluded him, to date. Yes, he has a talented sidekick in Wallace, but I hope their numbers are closer by the end of the year.
9. Special Teams. Yeah, they got a punt, but our snaps and cohesion still look miles ahead of last year.
10. Ho-Hum. Yep, this has been as anti-climatic a start to a season as we’ve had since Southern Mississippi upset us in 2016.
At least this ho-him start has not involved a loss.
Even the stadium has been a very subdued atmosphere, the team and crowd seem to be waiting for an SEC opponent to get roudy . . . a bad attitude.
I’ll be 30 minutes early for the Zips!! A change of attitude has to start somewhere!!!
