Fredrick Douglas

Eh. High School team drove 5 hours to first game in Hall of Fame stadium on Saurday afternoon in Canton Ohio to play Akron powerhouse. Not sure how accurate barometer of team for the season.

Hoban is a powerhouse in Ohio. Douglas had no chance. Admire them traveling for the game but they were completely out matched across the board.

Hoban and Winton Woods (UK pipeline school) are both D2 powers in Ohio. They are the best D2 schools in Ohio and would probably be favored vs just about everybody in KY.

Actually CCHS is the best D2 school currently. They lost to St Ed the D1 champ by 3 and beat Hoban easily last year. They blew out Findlay and Ryan Montgomery last night

Edit: CCHS after winning the D2 title last year dropped to D3.

TOLEDO CCHS for people who don't follow ohio high school football. They beat Hoban 28-21 Div 2 finals. Ohio this year State champs Div 1 Lakewood St. Edward Div 2 Akron Hoban Div 3 Toledo Central Catholic Div 4 Cleveland Glenville.

It seems like Bryan Station was the next best LEX team last year, right?

THAT should be a good game

Henry Clay as I understand it has a fairly new coach and is rebuilding?

I live in Winch and Clark Co used to be tough - they went to a new 6A district last year and play FDoug, BSTATION, Mad Central , & Oldham Co now

Bell Co & Corbin will be tough again

PS - can someone explain the 6A designation in KY football?

Is it true that was initially established for the large and resourceful Catholic schools only?

Hoban hasn’t been unbeatable the last couple of years, losing in the state finals to Winton Woods in ‘21 and TCC in ‘22. However they look to be headed to Wk 15 again.

Moving to six classes was a way for the KHSAA to do nothing about the rampant recruiting that was going on in Louisville at the time.
Most every puplic HS in Lex is 6A.

Tell me about Lex-Catholic - have they been a consistently strong program?

I didn't grow up here & while Middlesboro played Henry Clay off/on over the years -- I wasn't familiar at all w/the others

LCA of course trounced MB in the finals four of the playoffs two yrs ago - and that school is easily visible near the mall

We also played Clark Co occupational in the 80s. They seem removed fm how good they used to be

Lex-Catholic is 3A?

Played Archbishop Hoban (Akron), OH. Douglas lost 45-6. Hoban is one of the top teams in the nation.
There’s a big gap between ky hs football and Ohio or Tennessee now. Different type of football. Much more physical.

I’ve heard there was and has been mucho complaining about Frederick Douglas recruiting. Seems like they stockpiled a lot of d1 talent quickly and never really had to develop a program over time.

Good right out of the gate.

If I understand it correctly, they have a “freshman academy” and therefore three don’t have to count their freshman students towards their total enrollment. It allows them to play a class down due to the fudged numbers. Shady

They are 6a this year but that academy allows them to admit out of district. Other Fayette schools have specific academies too but nobody is applying to more specific ones like engineering at Lafayette in order to play football out of district.

You can go to about any HS you wish in Lexington due to the prograns unique to each school. It just so happens that Douglas has a leadership academy geared towrds AA young men.
And to answer the question, Lex Catholic's recruiting has been down the last several years. and a high HC turnover, has kept them back of late.

Hoban
Winton Woods
Massillion
CCHS
Lasalle

These are generally the five top D2 programs in Ohio. Lasalle has been down the last couple seasons but they will be back. Not too long ago Lasalle won 4 out of 6 state titles. Kings is another D2 program on the rise. Region 8 is going to be brutally tough.

I seen yesterday that CCHS dropped down to D3. They won the D2 title last year
