Freddie Maggard said It Best About Over-Crediting UF's Defense

Freddie Maggard ‏@FredMaggard 2h2 hours ago Kentucky, USA
Give Florida defense credit, but shouldn't have been that dominant. New Mexico St and East Carolina vastly more successful vs. same team.
They were also missing key defensive players those games and they were hardly fired up to play them. They have the best rush defense statistically in the country and probably the best secondary. That defense is elite. They have been top 15 the last 4 years in a row.

So they were fired up to play powerhouse UK?

Michael is correct, all week people have been saying we were going to beat them (and we should have) but you can bet they heard it and were not happy.

There is plenty of blame to go around. It is a team game period. We must get better in all phases of the game. It does not help the qb when we drop touchdown passes. He has to gain confidence in his receivers and they in him. The o-line has to do a better job. We had a great chance to win the game and didn't make the plays that it took to get the job done. Let's wait and see how next week goes. We are getting close!

We are close all right , close to no bowl game again . With a win at pitiful USC as our best win . I see no improvement thru 3 games , unless you count the D as very solid last night

Yes, it actually makes a difference when 2 of the best cornerbacks in the country return from injuries. LOL! It is amazing how people rant almost mindlessly after losses. Even Mr. Maggard is not immune from doing this, although he has an advantage over most fans because he actually knows how the game of football is played. Prior to this game, Maggard correctly said that Florida's defense would be the best defense we have played so far, and 1 of the best we will see all year. He was right. I understand why people are disappointed this morning. So am I. But I am not surprised. We were beaten by a better football team that took advantage of our shaky pass protection and executed their defensive game plan. I believe we saw the 2nd best team in the SEC East last night. I would have preferred to win, but I won't rant about it. Prior to the season, I predicted 6 or 7 regular season wins and a bowl. I never expected to go 12-0. And I fully expect to beat Missouri next week.

last year it was Phillips til he played a series or two, haven't heard of him since!

And..how is it working with Towles for you? 51% completion percentage on last 7 games. We win with good QB play in UL last year and Florida game this year.

Dawson either is not capable of the job or Towles is not. Barker at least deserves some shots. Florida is not the Florida of old. I personally don't think the team felt they could win after they were down 14-3. That old mentality is hard to shake. I hope I am wrong on that.
I feel Stoops owes the team to at least try a different quarterback.

I agree with most of this comment. I don't want to jump on Patrick's butt just to be a hater. That's not the case at all. But he's NOT getting the job done. Even though we started 2-0 he isn't accurate with his passes. Does he hit a receiver on occasion- yes...... but overall he misses too many open receivers. If he's the best we've got then I guess he should keep the job but at least give Barker a chance. If he can't get it done then go back to Towles. Again, just give Barker one opportunity.

I dunno. Missouri seems to always deliver a pass rush. I think "shaky" is a very Christian way of describing our pass protection.

Be on guard when you see false comments like this. They attempt to lay a false foundation to justify some conclusion. If, for example, the two alternatives are not the only two explanations, then what follows might also be as disingenuous.

-fla D is outstanding, best front 7 Uk will ser this year. However UK beat themselves...2 dropped td passes. No margain for error.
I've seen this a few times that UK WR drops were part of Pat's issues.

1. Dorian Baker dropped the TD in his belly on first drive.
2. Jeff Badet dropped an easy 5 yard catch later in game..

Where were all the other drops and where was the other dropped TD pass? Please don't tell me the ball to Blake Bone was a drop...it was way over his head and 100% on Towles bad pass.

Didn't really understand his tweet because it didn't take into account UF was without their 2 best DBs in the first two games and one is the best cover man in the country. That's a huge difference. We really haven't had a player on defense like that in years but it would be like UK's 1977 defense playing without Art Still. It wouldn't be the same defense.

If you look at the stats, UK defense was almost as dominant over UF's offense but it admittedly didn't feel that way watching it. Grier wasn't running for his life near as much as Towles was.

Try again. How you could defend our offense in that game is beyond me.

Not sure he is defending our offense as much as addressing Freddie's lack of insight to UF missing 50%, their best 50% btw, of their defensive backfield those games and the fact UF allowed negative yards rushing.

I do not see a defense for the offense - oline, QB, wr, coaching must do better.

All that comment confirms is his analysis is as a big a failure as his stint as a UK quarterback.
Who was missing in UF's front seven against NM State and ECU that played against UK? And please, tell us your athletic achievements so we can compare them to Freddies. What SEC team recruited you and which one did you choose?

I think they had most everyone, maybe a lber? But that is probably why they held opponents to negative rushing yards...

With the strong rush by Florida why didn't Towles try some quick short passes? He kept trying to hit long bombs that are lower percentage passes. Short passes at least mixed in with the runs would have been better than runs every time that weren't working.

I asked this during the game, there really wasn't much time for those.

However, you may be asking the WRONG question.

Who is calling those long pass plays? I doubt PT had much freedom regarding play calling against that defense. Maybe he did? We don't know.

I haven't been impressed with his analysis either. Although in this case I actually agree with Maggard since we have a tendency to make Florida players look like all-Americans when in reality some of those guys who look like stars against UK couldn't start for any other contender in the league (Trey Burton is the best example). It's the Kentucky effect. I would not at all be shocked if UT rolls up 500+ yards against this Flordia D next week and Will Grier looks like garbage.

Exactly. Towles is (trying to) execute the plays that are called. He doesn't call them. Again, there are plays that can slow down a pass rush, and we never used any of them.
