Franklin at PSU is hard to figure

He's a jersey. We can all agree on that.

1. Consistently one of the best recruiting classes in the B10, generally top 20 or better.
2. Proved he can coach while winning at Vandy.
3. Has to play OSU every year which is a high mountain to climb.
4. Has won 91 games in 11 years and lost 49.

While he's been successful, I'd certainly describe his tenure as underwhelming considering the expectations when he arrived from Vandy. Just can't figure out why he hadn't gotten PSU to the next level. On paper, he's had the talent to do so.

I think the guy looks the part, but I agree. I expected more from him at Penn St for some reason. I think he does a lot of micro managing of coordinators from what I’ve seen. He’s a big personality and rah rah guy but something is not quite allowing him to have a bigger breakthrough. He won’t ever win the Big 10 IMO while in Happy Valley.

Wasn't he operating in the gray areas at Vandy, though? Players out of control off the field and the like? It seems like he had a looooong leash there and candy regrets it and PSU might not allow it. Penn St might be keeping a tight lid on that sort of stuff after the Sandusky stuff.

I'll take the opposite side. I thought he was overrated OC at Maryland and at Vandy he won some games when SECE was at its nadir and he had a weak non-conf...like really weak. He rode that receiver Matthews to his next job.

He's fine but not worth what PSU extended him on earlier this year. He's awful at late game clock management.

The last several plays, Broom mismanaged the clock. Threw 3 straight passes and didn't burn any time. Head scratcher. Doesn't need to score. Could ha e run off another minute or and punted PSU deep. May win anyway.

Franklin definitely a bit shady at Vandy but no way should they ever beat UT consistently. Or GA and FL more than once a decade. He did well there however it was accomplished.

His teams end up ranked and in good bowls but hasn't really been consistently battling for the B10 championship. Seems strange to me.

Purdue feels like a top tier G5 team trying to make it in the BIG20.

Another stupid set of plays by Brohm. Burned no clock, only forced PSU to burn one timeout. I know 'play to win' and one first down probably seals it but two straight series he didn't burn enough clock with the lead.
