I really liked the first play call. It was out of the norm for UK and would have set the tone of the game in a positive way. Everyone was expecting a Crod run through the Tackle gap. What I hated was the execution which set the tone of the game in a negative way. I blame the fumble on Crod. He had clear vision that the play was blown up. He should have just gone down with the ball and not tried to make chicken salad out of chicken poop.

I realize the play result was a bummer, but I liked the call. Was unexpected for sure. May be they should have tried a flea flicker as USC had 8 defenders close to the line of scrimmage

Should’ve been a play action pass. Everyone knew it was going to be a run. so hey let’s run a slow developing play so the whole defense can get there.

7 - 7 at half. We just sucked after.
There were also two missed calls by the refs on each of USC’s TD drives. One on the 42 yard bubble screen run when our defender was actually tackled to the ground and second, when our defender was hit with a blind side block on their second drive.
I won’t discuss the PI on at least two passes we threw in the second have that resulted in stalled drives

I liked the call, too, and agree with you on CROD’s recognition failure. Yes, I told the guys I watched the game with that I wanted the flea-flicker to give our WRs a chance to beat them deep. I called for it the entire game … to no avail.

In retrospect, I think the perfect call was the one we threw to Dingle for the TD. Fake pitch to CROd who EVERYONE thought was going to get the ball and then hit a quick pass to TE in the seam for no less than a first down and maybe more. Others that were surely there were a PA pass to Brown or TR on a quick slant for, again, a quick first down or maybe more. No one on USC's sideline thought anything other than give CRod the ball.

The problem, more than anything else, was expecting CRod to do something he's never had to do: read the play, make a pitch. He's not a QB and he's a straight downhill runner. If one of the WR had played QB in HS, then maybe give him the ball and let him handle it. But CRod was put in a situation that he had no prior experience handling. Bad call on the OC (even though, supposedly, the entire sideline was open if Brown is able to get the pitch cleanly - still a very risky call that was unnecessary when other, less risky plays, like the ones above, were also there for the taking).

We put a backup QB in a 7-0 hole.

Why not start grinding it out and if you punt, rely on your sturdy defense.

Not good. But as said above, Chris should have eaten the loss.

Had CRod recognized the blown play and Ruffalo not missed another FG, we go in to half time up 10-0.

Then we come out the second half and grind them more with CRod. Wear them out and coast to victory.

I feel like this was how the staff thought it would go, and they didn't adapt when the plan blew up.

Sherron played bad, but was also not put in a position to succeed.

IMO, you call that play if you get a few first downs and are near midfield. I hate the play when you're on the 20, especially given that our OL has been poor and often allows defenders into the backfield.

If you click on the link below. Once USC brought the safety in the box and put an extra defender on the play side edge....it was blown up and needed to get out of that play immediately.

1. KSR stated Dingle missed his block (which shows how un informed they are at football). Dingle was in motion and once the ball was snapped, the edge rusher was free and Dingle had no angle to contain to go to the outside. The best he could do was push him as far as he could outside and CRod could have cut inside his block to keep it and avoid the disaster that occurred.

2. This is were either the coaches or Sheron needed to see the edge pressure that was coming and get out of that play. The Oline and TE did a fine job as they could in the circumstances they were put in.

This is why it's best to actually go back and watch plays before jumping to conclusions. This was 100% on Scangerello and QB1 to be able to get us out of a play. It's coaching guys....sometimes it is X and O's...and not Jimmys and Joes.

Probably should use it as the first play against Mississippi State. Nobody in the world including Stoops would expect it. He said he told Sheron he would not run it again. Levis should check to it.

Trick play disaster
Live, I think Brown might of been a little late but you are right here. No chance.

Gadget play. We looked like a FCS team hoping to upset a FBS team.

If we were the more talented team at home & favored to win (and we were)....we should have acted like it and gone with our strength.....pounded the rock down their throats via C/Rod from the first snap.....started chewing clock....shortening the game......and .giving the young QB some manageable throwing down & distance situations.

As it stands, we put our "never taken a college snap" backup QB in a bad position with a 7-0 hole in the first 30 seconds of the game.

We're not going to be respected as a good team until we start acting like one. A trick play on the first snap looks more like desperation than anything else....we looked scared with the play call and stupid with the play execution.

GBB!

Why try some goofy trick play, seems UK's trick plays seldom work anyway? Thought TV talking heads nailed it, said UK was overthinking the play, trying to be "too cute."

I thought Barion Brown was late on his break and I thought Crod should now have pitched the ball when he saw the play failing

I call it "The Hilton Head Factor". Pretty certain some SEC refs vacation cheap.

Just kidding. Well... sort of.

Sometimes you have to give credit to the defense. The defender dropped down to the line as soon as he saw the TE motion. Upon snap he rushed up field. I think he read the pitch. CRod definitely would have been better off eating the tackle. Still a great defensive play.

Re-watch it...he was set off the edge from the get go as soon as UK was at LOS. It was not a last second shift....I guess Sheron/Scang thought he was just going to stay outside the tackle box...but he instead darted into the backfield and blew the whole play up.

I can't see a scenario where it was a good idea to try this stuff with so many guys on the edge waiting to create chaos. I guess you give USC credit for being aggressive.

Poor scheme and play calling IMO

Maybe unexpected, but was defended pretty well. Defender fought off the block and got his hand on the pitch. Defender came harder that the blocker was expecting who honestly didn't put much effort into block because it was going opposite side.
