While on lunch hour I took a look at next week's depth chart for each SEC team and noted the number of Sophomores and Freshman on each SEC team. Here are the results:

Team Offense Defense
Soph. Fresh. Soph. Fresh.
Tennessee 5 3 3 1
Auburn 4 3 3 2
Kentucky 7 1 1 2
Texas A & M 2 4 0 5
Vanderbilt 5 1 5 0
LSU 4 2 3 1
Florida 4 2 2 0
Georgia 3 1 3 1
South Carolina 2 2 3 1
Arkansas 2 0 3 1
Missouri 2 1 2 1
Alabama 2 2 0 1
Mississippi 1 0 3 0
Miss. State 0 0 0 1

I just finished the total number of sophomores and freshmen on the two deeps for each school - results:

Texas A & M 28 out of 44
LSU 27
Tenn. 27
Vanderbilt 25
Kentucky 25
Georgia 23
S. Carolina 23
Florida 23
Arkansas 23
Missouri 22
Auburn 21
Alabama 19
Ole Miss 14
Miss. State 9

We can stop saying we are so young as compared to other schools. We are one of the youngest, but not that much difference as 11 schools are within a few players compared to age. In reality we are league of young talented players. What this more clearly shows is the current experience difference and depth. Our upperclassmen are not close to any of the other schools - including Vanderbilt as to talent and ratings. We have improved with quality in the younger classes.

Mississippi State has built the perfect proto type program for someone like Kentucky to follow. If you look closely at the numbers we seem to be mimicking their development in many ways. If Stoops can get the coaching part right it will pay off in the long run. Mullen's success was NOT overnight. But he has a solid program now with players moving up yearly to step in and be ready to play - how did he do it - REDSHIRTING and RECRUITING.

As you can see UK has one of the youngest offenses in fact 14 of our top 22 players are freshmen or sophmores - this speaks well for the future. It also shows why Dawson has more issues that most of us are aware of or want to admit to this year. Because the SEC really is a defensive league and the numbers and depth of defenses compared to offenses is much higher in favor of the defenses. One thing that jumps out is how young Auburn and Tennessee's offenses are as well. You will also notice that virtually every team's defense has few freshmen and sophomores starting.

I think this proves what everyone says about our team and most others. Our defense has more experience and thus plays better than our offense. It also appears, that most teams favor putting their most experienced players on defense. Which has always been the strength of the SEC.
