Yeah! It's on now!

done pissed the women's side off and they will band together and bury the hatchet...... right in ole Bubba and Roy's pointy little heads!

I believe trying to make this a Women's Basketball Issue was probably as stupid as trying to get away with it for the past 20+ years!

Racism, sexism, threats, you name it, this bunch will utilize it if it makes them think they can salvage their basketball program's reputation.

The thing that I still find amazing is that so much has been invested in protecting Roy Williams (and ultimately Dean Smith). What the UNC syndicate has been counting on to date is the fact that Wainstein in his report asked Williams if he knew anything about the cheating and Williams replied he did not, and Wainstein (who UNC hired and paid BTW) says he believed him. (!shocker!)

That's it. No objective look at the evidence all around (including the goings-on at one of Williams' own houses), no probing of why someone paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in bonuses for the team's academic performance suddenly knew nothing about the classes his players were taking (and this after he made quotes that he and his staff pay close attention to exactly these things), no questioning of his claim that he was concerned with clustering but apparently did nothing about it* until 5 years after his 2005 team won the championship with nearly every major player on the squad enrolled in AFAM studies (and even then many of the players ended up clustering in Communications).

I just find it all very curious, and do wonder why the media hasn't been much more questioning this.

Of course as I've said before it doesn't bother me THAT much that Williams is still the coach, as I find that at this stage of his career he's a mediocre coach at best, especially when he doesn't have the type of overwhelming talent that he's been accustomed to.

* Also as a side-note, the early investigations suggested that the UNC basketball players didn't start to move away from AFAM studies until Deborah Crowder and Wayne Walden left their positions circa 2009. I remember reading something about one of the new coordinators who took over some of Walden's duties was appalled at the classes being taken and refused to allow the players to take some of these bogus courses and that was what ultimately forced them away from AFAM (unlike football who at the time continued to rely on AFAM studies for their athlete's credits).

I don't know what happened to this storyline but it seems to be usurped by the claim that Roy Williams was the one who expressed interest in having the players stop clustering in AFAM. Maybe that's true but it would be nice to see a little more evidence than an off-hand claim in the Wainstein report based on an interview with Williams. (and even if true, as mentioned above, it begs the question as to why Williams waited so many years before he finally started to ask questions about the clustering that UNC relied so heavily on.)

Have to believe that is only the first of many that will speak out if the Cheats keep pushing the "It was WBB" narrative.

I am proud to be a member of the UNC women’s basketball program, but I cannot say I am proud to be represented by an administration that will throw a legendary coach to the wolves to protect men’s athletic teams.

@JPScott , suppose it's true that he did move the players away from clustering in AFAM. The clustering then moved to COMM. That '09 roster was knee deep in Communications. Another suspect area, that wasn't within Wainstein's purview. Why isn't anybody calling him on that?

Exactly. And keep in mind that the way UNC is structured, the College of Arts and Sciences is so loosely organized that many students who may end up majoring in Communications still relied of AFAM studies classes for a good amount of their credit hours. So to try to shield themselves by only looking at the name of the major is misleading.

There was a football player who said in an interview about a year ago that he didn't even know whether he had majored in Communications or AFAM Studies until they mailed him his diploma.

UNC and their fans would throw blame on anyone to avoid major sanctions on the men's basketball program. I honestly don't think they would care if the NCAA shut down every other sports program at UNC as long as the basketball program avoided the hammer.

Yep....that's how they treat someone who just overcome cancer a year ago on the Hill. Give Roy an extension and throw her under the bus. Pretty sickening actually.

Probably on their Dean's List.

What's hilarious to me is how UNC Fan just ignores this stuff. Not one mention about this on IC.

Where are all the Womens Lib groups on this? If enough of them and the media, minus ESPN, we know Skipper will never allow that, start talking about this, then uNC is in deep sh*t.

Remember this post here on the Rafters that was picked up and put on Pack Pride? Well both the Willingham blog calling UNC out for scapegoating women and now this one in the OP have came after it:

As we all know UNC created a massive cheating scandal to keep athletes eligible for well over two decades in and amongst so many other wild outlandish incidents that they are almost impossible to keep up with. Wheels for Heels, Fats and the dental school, Grills for Heels, Tami Hansbrough the frequent flyer, Pell Grant Fraud, forging grades, forging signatures... it just never ends.

But what has yet to be put together and focused on are UNC's true motives and their penchant for using minorities as their scapegoats. First they create the fraud and place it in African American studies, then when they get caught they are heel bent on using the women's program as the scapegoat to take the fall for the men's program.

So exactly how many minorities does UNC get to throw under the bus before folks understand that not only is there a huge problem with the integrity of the folks that are running that circus, but that they also have a glaring penchant for exploiting minorities and women?

If the folks that are normally sensitive to these matters start asking questions like "Why did you pick African American studies to conduct your fraud in? Was it because you already viewed it as worthless?" and "How can you possibly expect everyone to believe this massive fraud was perpetuated to help the women's team? Why are you now trying to throw women under the bus because you got caught throwing African American studies under the bus?" Also, "Why are all the employees UNC has offered up as scapegoats been women and minorities such as Julius Nyang'oro and Debbie Crowder?" Yet all the white guys like Roy Williams and his hand picked buddy Wayne Walden get off scott-free? Not to mention the entire scam was created under the careful watch of Dean Smith and the current ACC Commisioner John Swofford... what do all of these guys have in common?

Clearly UNC in their poisonous minds first felt African American Studies was not worthy of serious academic study and now clearly they think women's sports is something that can conveniently be discarded because it is inherently worth less than the men's program is.

There are serious issues with the leadership at UNC and they go far beyond sport. The complete lack of integrity in offering up their academic reputation to try and save their athletic accomplishments is one thing, but the pattern of exploiting minorities and women have been inexcusable and reveal much deeper and more insidious problem with UNC leadership than NCAA infractions. UNC for all intents and purposes is a modern day plantation and Master is not going to give up their trophies easily when so many "worthless" bodies are about and ready to be sacrificed.

The dirty secret is; (It's really dirty and not so secret.) the people that usually make the most noise about these atrocities have made a lot of money doing it. (Kind of like carpet-baggers) recently a few of the regular "money grubbers" have been told to stay away or leave a function they normally attend because the leaders of the functions are getting wise. All these minority leaders have been doing is begging for money and donations from the very people they say they are fighting for....and then....doing nothing except going to the other side and extorting money from them too.

Maybe some day soon more will wise-up to that fact and stand together with those that would do the right thing just because it's the right thing to do...

Particularly because North Carolina looks at itself as an ultra liberal civil rights beacon so hoisting them on their own petard like this could really get those liberal professors to finally jump ship en masse over this, finally.

we'll never know how deep it goes. we all know afam studies was the tip of the iceberg. the whole clustering thing was probably rampant among the majors most commonly enrolled in by athletes. you connect the dots, or just take a quote as n&o did a whole article on this specifically iirc. it's a way of life for these people. that's what we're really seeing over time here. eff deep throat, we need melisse the abyss for this one.

In the later years of the scandal, UNC WBB was absolutely guilty of cheating. However, UNC's own data CLEARLY shows that the academic cheating began with the MEN's BASKETBALL team... under Dean Smith.

During DEAN SMITH's final 8 years at UNC

Enrollments in bogus classes per sport:
Men's basketball -- 54
Football -- 26
Women's basketball -- 2
All other sports -- 0

Men's basketball enrollments doubled-up football.... and keep in mind how many more football players on a roster as compared to basketball. Men's basketball had a MUCH greater percentage of players taking bogus classes.

Yes.... WBB had 2 enrollments in fake classes while Dean Smith was at UNC... yet UNC expects us to believe WBB is to blame for the cheating.... while men's basketball had 54.

NOTE: These numbers come directly from the UNC-funded Wainstain Report & UNC's 2nd response to SACS. These numbers come directly from UNC or its affiliates.

:okay:

If women's groups get involved in this (which looks like that process has already started) and UNC goes ahead with their obvious strategy of throwing the women's team under the bus then this could get ugly beyond any ugly we've seen so far. That would probably (finally) trigger African American groups to take notice of UNC's exploitation of women and minorities plus their penchant for throwing them under the bus when they need to come up with a scapegoat.

When you add up everyone involved in this charade from faculty , players , coaches , administration , tutors , fans , former governors , general attorneys , judges , athletic directors turned commissioners , professors , who would have thought that Rashad McCants would be the only one to show integrity or honesty ? And they hate him for it , which shows how far off the path they have gone .

This, and its honestly the only hope we have of anything significant happening to that program by way of sanctions.

Since you stated rather forcefully, without offering names, that groups who stand up for people are taking money as a "dirty little secret," my first guess is you do not have the names to offer. My second guess is, you really do not know of money changing hands, period.

Dude, Dude, Dude, or Dudette, Dudette, Dudette,

I never said ANYTHING about "groups who stand up for people" (You seem to quote like others on this site do. It's not right and never will be.) I said """people"""..in this instance people can be used as singular.

You ARE correct that I did not name, names. (I CAN.) That was out of respect for the OP, the minute I name, names it becomes a political thread.

Yes I DO know of money changing hands and it's been reported many, many times in many different situations and places.

You Sir, or Ma'am are a bad guesser. I suggest you leave well enough alone but "You do what you want to do."- H. Lane

I love that Wainstain, who did the independent report, is also on the board of the Pope Foundation, an education foundation which shockingly shares a name with the Pope Academic Support Center at UNC, where this all happened. TOTALLY independent.

Unbelievable!

Again if this was happening at UK.... It would be non stop... Demonizing of Cal... The negative recruiting would be off the charts. Every day PTI or some radio guy would be complaining why Cal has not stepped down or why Mitch has not fired him. Jerry Tipton would have endless material and a new article in the Lexington Rag every single day.

But Roy and UNC ... Crickets.

Is the head of ESPN a UK grad?

Well, that's why.

Simply put, Cal wouldn't survive anything near this magnitude, much less get bonuses for academic performance when claiming he can't keep up with every player.

Roy simply has had it way too easy with all the deferring; time for the NCAA to ignore any statute of limitations, bring in the transcripts and call it was it is; blatant disregard for what a state university should stand for.

Syracuse should feel like they got off easy once these penalties are announced.

Amazing the way Roy can dismiss all his responsibilities for which he was paid huge bonuses simply by referring to it all as "that junk" when he has directly contradicted himself on numerous occasions. Plus he comes out of it with an extension.

If the NCAA tolerates that sort of arrogance in UNC roundly thumbing their noses at the rules then they truly are worthless.
