ROY is a hit-or-miss award in the NBA. Not as bad as winning Coach of the Year which, unless your Popovich pretty much means you'll be fired within the next three years. Malcolm Brogdon just won the award averaging 10 and 4. I doubt he'll ever be a franchise player. Looking back since 2000 I would say Towns, Wiggins, Lillard, Irving, Rose (much smaller window of elite level than most would have anticipated), Durant, CP3, LeBron and Pau Gasol were guys who won the award and either went on to be or have the ability to become franchise players who annually are selected to All-Star games and can help lead their teams in the playoffs. That leaves guys like Michael Carter-Williams (constantly being traded around), Blake Griffin (O-VER-RAT-ED), Brandon Roy (health issues), Emeka Okafor (one way player, never had an offensive game), Amar'e Stoudemire (injuries and zero desire to win), Mike Miller (solid role player but low ceiling) and Steve Francis (do I really need to say much here?)
Most likely a guy like Lonzo Ball or Ben Simmons will win ROY with gaudy stats on a team that won't sniff the playoffs this season. John Wall didn't win ROY when he averaged 16/8/4 his rookie season. I would have taken him over Blake Griffin that year and every year since. ROY is a nice trophy for a guy like Lonzo. I feel like our guy Fox is much more interested in other potential awards.
