Central Michigan fired basketball coach Tony Barbee on Thursday after the Chippewas failed to advance to the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the second time in three years.

Athletic director Amy Folan announced that Barbee would not return for a fifth season, saying the program “needs to go in a different direction.”

Central Michigan went 14-17 overall and 7-11 in conference play to finish 10th in the 12-team standings. Barbee had a 49-75 record with the Chippewas, including 0-2 in MAC Tournament games.

Cal’s coaching tree is the Charlie Brown Christmas tree of coaching trees.

Ha. Im always torn on this topic. Like Saban and McVeys coaching tree is very stout.. but are those guys part of the reason the Rams did so well? On the flipside is Bill Belichick, his staff has sucked for years when they left him. But that almost sort makes me respect him more for being maybe the only reason they had success. It sure doesn't seem like Cal has much help on the bench outside of Robic lolol.

This begs the question, which coach in history had the best coaching tree? I think it has to be Pitino. I can't think of another coach who had that many successful future coaches as one-time assistants. Pitino's first staff alone at UK had Donovan, Tubby and Ralph Willard.

Herb Sendek as well. Leonard Hamilton was on UK staff but I don't recall under who.

Cal's coaching tree is "elite"

Hard to argue against Knight winning by spawning K.

But as to the subject at hand:

Wait——You can actually get uninvited to your own conference tournament???

Nobody thought that was going to be a good hire in the first place. Why would a school like Central Michigan get a washed up former head coach?

I don't think Vogel counts as Pitino's coaching tree as he never was an assistant under him. Student manager doesn't count.

Neither does Mark Pope. He falls under Mark Fox's coaching tree. Not that playing under Coach Pitino wasn't influential, but one should actually have to have coached under someone to be counted under their tree. Otherwise Pope could be counted under Washington's coach before UK, Pitino, or any coach he played under in the NBA.

You mean another Calipari disciple can’t coach a lick? I’m astonished at this breaking news!

Here is his coaching tree if it were a person.

Lynn Nance who was under Joe B Hall's coaching tree (as were Leonard Hamilton and Dwane Casey) who are all under Rupp's coaching tree

Ram a stick through him, turn him a few times over a nice, warm fire, and send him to Pearl for one of his patented barbeeq's.

I can’t really understand how he got hired as a head coach again. Not quite as bad as if someone gave Payne gave a second chance at a head coaching gig, but not that far off either.
