Nothing Earth-shattering, but Evan White is going to play first for Kentucky this season. One of the most intriguing storylines with UK baseball in the offseason -- at least in my eyes -- was the possibility of White moving to the outfield. As it turns out he's too good defensively at first base to be moved.
I did some reporting on White for a feature I'm writing for D1baseball.com, but here's a quote from Nick Mingione on White:
"The confidence that our infielders have him in there is through the roof. When you start thinking about the psyche that plays into all of this, whether it be a pitcher or one of our infielders, they just have tremendous peace knowing he’s there. That’s really important for our ball club."
I'm sure it's possible White could still see some action in the outfield if the situation dictates it, but having a first baseman as good defensively as White is hard to find in college baseball. Think it'll be fascinating to see if the club that drafts White after this season plays him in the outfield or at first.
