ESPN Wants To Delay ACC Network Launch

This isn't actually the ACC's fault. ESPN is shaking in their boots of the prospect of cable companies "untethering" the traditional cable package and allowing consumers to pay for single channels "a la carte." Right now Cable subscribers pay the most each month for ESPN then any other channel. But ESPN has done extensive surveys and discovered that only about 20% of all national cable subscribers watch ESPN channels every month. So if the system changes suddenly ESPN will lose 80% of their carriage fee's which is their primary form of revenue. Why they are really in trouble is there biggest expenditure is sports rights fee's but they are already locked into all these multimillion dollar long term contracts with all the professional sports league's and college conferences. That's why they fired all those people last week because payroll is one of the few area's they control and can actually decrease cost. ESPN is trying desperately to save as much money as possible and take very little risks currently.

They are trying to hold off till ACC is irrelevant. By then pitino boeheim and Roy will be kicked to the curb and K will be retiring. What's left. Smart move

Don't tell Dook Vitale.[roll]

Actually ESPN has been outbid by E! Network. Caitlyn Jenner stars as one of the white girls that Andre McGee brings in(played by Gary Coleman). On the Real Housewives Tom Jurich's wife(played by Rosie O'Donnell) gets upset when Pitino drops by at 3 in the morning drunk off his butt and pee's in the fishtank before having sex with a warm apple pie for 15 seconds and then passing out.

Very interesting. I keep hearing about the "a la carte" possibilities in the future and truly believe it will happen sooner than later. Fascinating to read how it will likely impact the mothership.

The collapse of ESPN is overblown. It just means they are going to have to cut some fat and change their structure. It might be a bit difficult for a few years while many of their deals run course, but people thinking they are going to go away are crazy.

as much as I hate to say it - it's not the basketball that is dictating this. What does the ACC really have, overall, football-wise that would make this a profitable move? I know they have FSU, Clemson and maybe Miami? Those guys are usually on the regular national channels. Do they have anyone else who would draw so much? (btw, didn't read the article, so could be way off here)

I worked for a company 10 years ago in Lexington doing market research on cable going "a la carte". It will happen, just the $$$ is holding everything up. The minute the cable companies figure out the best way to monetize it, they will roll it out.

Correct, that are already in the midst of restructuring. Only way they go away is if they royally screw up.

plus most of cbb viewing occurs for the really big matchups and then the tourney... all likely would not be on acc network. va tech playing fsu on wed just isn't gonna pull viewers.

and totally agree college football is pulling the cart. conference realignment was because of football and the conf's starting their own networks was because of football. there are probably only 5 schools that could pull viewers to basketball like most college football team do.

ps. miami is actually a small fanbase. they dont even sell out their stadium but 1 or 2 game/year. miami is a pro town and miami is not gonna pull very many viewers unless they are #1 ranked and "bad" and draw everyone outside of miami to view.

Just to clarify I only think that ESPN is cutting back on any major expenditure for the foreseeable future. ESPN has experienced explosive growth in the last 20 years and was at times the only thing keeping Disney from running a deficit as the only portion of their portfolio with massive profits. They aren't in danger of bankruptcy or failing from these massive potential changes in cable television delivery systems. But their days of being insanely profitable are likely over and they now face more competition then ever before in the marketplace so they have to be a lot more judicious in all their major decision making and be very selective about what risks they take which is why they are playing stall ball with the ACC right now.

That's totally unbelievable. Nobody's gonna be baking apple pies at 3 in the morning.
