Edwards with another good game

He’s improved but we’d still be a better team if Thiero and/or the guards got all of those minutes.

Still- if Cal’s going to keep playing him so often, we need something.
He has tons of ability. The only way we get to see it is if he gets minutes. He is suddenly improving.

He’s better but he’s still weak, doesn’t rebound, and gets pushed around and lost on defense. Someone with his frame should be way stronger.
He's such a "finesse" player. Strong defenders shut him down completely. I think the kid has talent, but he needs to get stronger and meaner. I do appreciate the fact that he has gotten better on D and seems committed to bettering his game.

Big reason he gets shut down is he can't go right.
He extremely left hand dominate.

He's looked a bit better since his one game he sat. It's a small sample size and he hasn't made a major jump but the tape looks better especially on the defensive end. Thought he was in for a huge game scoring the first seven for us last night. That's two games in a row he's looked much better. I'm pulling for Justin.

He was much more active on the defensive side of the ball in the first half. Much more active hands. He kind of backslid in the second half back to his early season form but the potential is there. You can see it. He just has to maintain that defensive intensity even when his offense isn't working as well. I think it is all mental with him now.

He wasn’t rated highly for no reason at all that for sure. He just hasn’t hit his potential, had some holes in his game that college exposes, and he needs time in the weight room. I hope he like Bradshaw and others strongly consider a return. Guys like them are perfect for a second year. UGO is worlds better his second year.

I don't trust him and yes he scored in the beginning on a missed but lucky bounce on one shot, an easy one on another, so let's not go overboard. He also fumbled the ball several times, made passes that were close to being picked, and other issues as quoted above. His taking 3's is mainly misses and shouldn't be the one taking them. Theiro was not that much better either driving into blocked shots, but he is willing to mix it up and perhaps that allows others some freedom on the offensive side.

I am glad that we won, but our rebounding against an Ole MIss team terrible this year in rebounding was not good. There were minimal second chance shots on the offense and fortunately Ole Miss kept missing their 3's often unguarded. So, our team still has a long ways to go. I would love Edwards to grow to superstar status and maybe it will but I don't see why he got the minutes he did other than Cal won't change.

I agree, but he DID have an improved performance based on previous games. 12 points and 2 rebs is improvement. But you're right, he's still underachieving overall. Something not shown in the box score though is how he actually plays fairly good perimeter defense. He has length on the perimeter, can close driving gaps quicker than others.

But I'd love for him to focus on 8-12 points per game AND 4 rebounds a game. That would be a great outing for him. He's looking more assertive on offense, looking to drive the ball. Just hope that he doesn't get TOO assertive and try to force the action too much

This game was the first game that I thought Edwards didn’t look scared and intimidated

Yeah, he needs to take the ball to the goal or drive into a pull-up jumper. That is his most consistent offense. When he just sits and jacks threes, he's not very good. He needs to find a rhythm before shooting. I think they've figured that out with him. The part that goes hand in hand with that is his confidence, which he has clearly lacked this season. We've seen a little bit of that the last few games. He just needs to keep pushing forward and improving. If he does, he could become a significant contributor. The potential is there.

He was fine against Ole miss. I'd like to see more rebounds when other guards had 4 to 7.
Edwards has had games where I thought he did ok rebounding. But I agree he needs to focus on being a better rebounder – which may come with strength, maturity and experience. I don’t think we can compare his rebounding to the Guards to suggest it’s ok. Edwards is not a Guard. UK can list him as a Guard. He can call himself a Guard. But he doesn’t have Guard skills, and I doubt he ever will. We can call Onyenso a Guard as well, but that doesn’t make it true.

I know it might just be a matter of semantics, but the seeming obsession with teams calling every player a Guard is kind of comical. I guess “Forward” is now a dirty word? But whatever position anyone wants to claim he is, Edwards should be expected to rebound at a higher and tougher clip than actual Guards to compete with the other team’s Bigs and help his team win. I think he’s shown some propensity to be a decent rebounder.

Forwards aren’t obsolete, all the centers are listed as forwards.
