Doyel Wonders Why Pacers Ignored Trey Lyles and RJ Hunter

Not quite getting his point. The NBA has evolved way beyond teams giving special consideration to homegrown guys. I don't necessarily agree with the Pacers that Turner is a better prospect than Lyles or Hunter, but their hometowns should not have any relevance to the decision.

He's writing for the Indy paper, trolling for hits.

It didnt when they chose reggie miller over steve alford. All their fans were super pissed at the time and look how that turned out. I was wondering if they were considering drafting lyles though

Well to be honest I wondered the same thing, Trey probably going to b a very good player for quite a while I was surprised Indiana didn't take him would sell a few more tickets too.

Sure it should. If you have two players who are fairly equal and your team needs both then why not draft the local kid. Will be great PR, bring excitement and sell tickets.

Do you think that Minnesota didn't take the fact that Tyus Jones was a local kid into consideration when they made that draft night trade?

It shouldn't be a key factor but to say it has no relevance at all is incorrect IMO.

It can count for something if the decision is neck and neck between 2 players and both fill a need for the team. A good stable home with family around can be very beneficial for a new player coming into the league, especially a 18-19 yr old kid. Obviously, a team isn't going to take a player simply based on where they're from but it can be a factor when the team are torn between 2 players.

At the same time, Turner, Lyles and Hunter all play totally different spots. It's not like they were choosing over three identical players.

I think they picked the guys they felt were best without giving any consideration to location. I mean, Lyles even said by way of Canada when he was drafted, so it's not like he identifies as being from Indiana in a major way.

Doyel is just continuing his incredibly local topics, which is clearly what his readers want. Great for him. Great for them. I still don't understand that career move though. It would be like Cal going to coach some high school team in Pittsburgh.

I wondered the same thing. I still enjoy his stuff from time to time. I preferred him as a national writer than an all-things-state-of-Indiana ass kisser.

LOL, just a reminder to some, the NBA is a business to most of the owners. Those businesses are based on fan support and and usually a local has way more support than outsiders.

I'm not sure Turner is that bad of a pick. I mean he was coached by Rick Barnes. :-/

He did better than expected with having shitty coach. He's top tier talent, and had he played at UK he'll probably be top 5 pick.

It's the pacers, what do you expect? Except for the Knicks and the 76ers they are equally bad.

You know what your right they have won how many titles in the nba? They have been to the finals once since entering the in 1967. That team was 2000. Somewhere the dunking Dutchman and Reggie miller are celebrating their almost but not quite championships lol.

Since 2000 Paul George was a great pick, yet look at some of their other outstanding picks. Good thing they traded away kawhi Leonard he would of been awful. Plumblee and Solomon hill didn't last long their either. Point is looking at these picks for everyone Paul george, there's 10 guys who never made an impact for them since they made the playoffs in 2000. Obviously the verdict is still out on turner.

Home town maybe, but didn't help that he decommitted from IU to go to UK . Hoosier hate for UK goes deep.

No, they did not enter the NBA in 1967, instead that was the year when they entered the ABA, you know the league in which they won three championships and were by far the League's most successful franchise.

Once Lyles committed to UK he was no longer considered a home grown player.
