He decommits from Illinois. I thought maybe this meant he would come here. We need DL in the class of 23 badly.
I just read on The Grove Report on Fan Nation that his final four schools and the visits he will take are Ole Miss, U of L, Michigan, and Auburn. No mention of us.
So are we recruiting this kid ? Anybody know what is going on with his recruitment ?
Fred Douglass has been a good pipeline for us lately. I can't make sense of it.

Stoops commented recently he likes his DL tall. This guy listed at 6'2", maybe that's accurate but maybe he's shorter. Don't know but UK's backed off twice so there's something they aren't feeling.

Don’t think the staff has much interest in him. Wish him the best but can’t cheer for him if he goes to UofL. Don’t know if he’s a take there either

In a world with a transfer portal, missing on priority targets in this HS cycle (Gilbert) doesn't mean you put the press on someone that doesn't seem ideal (if thats the judgment). We can recruit the roster spot out of the portal for the next two years. More than that, maybe he's just made clear he wants out of Lexington? Maybe he's offended he was not sooner prioritized? I'm not gonna lose sleep... portal. He wants to go up the road, let him.

My take is similar. Stoops has 15 commitments in his 2023 class and at least 80 scholarships for 2023 already taken. A few players will leave through the portal again, which always happens. A few new transfers will arrive through the portal too. Only a few more scholarships are left. If a prospect is not at the top of the list, he can wait in line. Harkless is at a disadvantage because Kentucky will not lose any Dlinemen by graduation. We are three deep there or more. Since Stoops wanted Kendrick Gilbert, he would take one more Dlineman if he gets his guy. Since Gilbert picked Purdue, maybe Stoops holds onto that scholarship to see what else opens up in December.

For 2023, most any DL signee in this class won't be needed, but that's the way it should be. You are really recruiting the OL/DL for at least 2 years from now b/c they usually need significant work on both their bodies and technique.

For 2023...
DT: SR Ox, SO Saunders, SO Dinkins (he has been at NG, but maybe he moves to DT)
NT: SR Hayes, SR Rogers, SO Walker
DE: JR Rybka, JR Anaele, JR Henry-Young

Potential DEs (I've heard coaches say they projected these guys to grow into DEs): Durojaiye (coach white compared his frame to Josh Paschal), Noah Matthews (he may be more of a stretch

Technically, those upperclassmen (JR/SR classes) could have an extra year due to the 2020 COVID season, but they may not elect to stay around an extra year.

So, assuming no one leaves after the 2022 season (NFL or txfr), there is a ton of depth for n2023. However, this current recruiting cycle is huge when projecting to 2024.

I'm not saying it needs to be Harkless as this coaching staff has clearly shown it has a great ability to evaluate recruits, but it does seem they need at least a 1-2 DTs in this recruiting class. Because good DTs are so hard to find as is, I would think it is easier to grow your own than grab one from the portal.

OX only a Junior in 2023…

OX only a Junior in 2023…

According to the roster on the UKathletics website, he is listed as a JR for 2022. However, reading their own language, he should be a JR in 2023. See below...

Oxendine UKathletics
2021 – Sophomore
• Played in six games with three starts before a knee injury vs. LSU sidelined him for the remainder of the season
• Named SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week after charting three tackles, including the first two quarterback sacks of his career (-16 yards), in Kentucky’s 42-21 win over LSU
• Totaled 15 tackles, 3.5 tackle for loss, 2.0 sacks and quarterback hurry in six games
• Made three tackles, including the first two quarterback sacks of his career, good for 16 yards of loss, in the win over LSU
• Made his first collegiate start at South Carolina and had two tackles
• Also started against Florida and had three tackles and a tackle for loss in the win
• Charted a career-high five tackles and one tackle for loss in the season opener vs. ULM
• Got his first quarterback hurry vs. UTC

2020 – Freshman
• Mid-year enrollee in January 2020
• Redshirt season

So... if he redshirted in 2020, he should've been a RS-FR in 2021, Soph in 2022, and JR in 2023 as you said.

That actually makes for more balance of the eligibility classes on the DL and is less concerning.
