Did the Villanova team a few years back

Villanova went to the Final Four in 2009 with a four guard lineup. Was a really good team, but nobody was stopping UNC that year.

That played four guards win the NCAA or was that another one ? Anyone know?
My guess is if we play our best athletes regardless of position we have a better chance to win .
2021 Baylor started only one guy taller than 6’5”. And they played vast stretches where they played the 6’5” guy at center with four guards around him. That team pretty much shattered all preconceptions about how much size you need to win a national championship.

And, yeah, the two Villanova champions played in a similar manner (as did 2019 Virginia). Jay Wright often used lineups where all five guys were perimeter players. … not bothering to put anyone in the post at all.

Jay Wright is so far above Cal he "couldn't see him" if he wanted to.

Those Guards were mature and pretty strong-bodied guys, right? If I remember correctly, the Butler guys in particular would drive in successfully against anybody or shoot a three in a defender's face, as well as rebound in traffic.

Villanova also had the 5th best defense in 2016 and 11th best defense in 2018.

So they had no issues defending while going small.

Yeah, they had four really tough mature talented guards. And the 6’5” guy (Mark Vital) was built like an NFL player (and, in fact, DID become an NFL tight end after that) …which helps explain how he was able to hack it at the center spot.

That was a really fun team to watch.
