Did PPatterson get a Coach K letter like this?

The guy is actually very approachable and nice in person.

I remember meeting him in the late early 90s. My middle brother was at his basketball summer camp. He was easy to talk to and just a very nice guy. I know a lot of UK fans hate him, but I've never had a bad opinion of him.

If memory serves me correctly, Tubby Smith supposedly sent the same type of letter to Chris Duhon after he signed with Duke.

Agree with you 100%; of all the times to meet him, my path crossed with his in Atlanta after the '92 game. Went to the NCAA dinner where K, Laettner, and Jason Kidd were being honored for EOY awards. It was very entertaining and everyone was very accessible and I can't say enough good things about the interaction.

I'd imagine this is standard protocol for quite a few coaches.

Exactly. It's not something that K introduced.

Somehow, a standard letter that many coaches have used and use wishing a kid good luck in his future endeavours after the kid moves on becomes a remarkably endearing & heart-felt letter when signed by Coach K . Don'tget me wrong, it is a very classy gesture on Coach K's part as well as the other coaches that do the same thing. I just think tge colorful description is more about slurping Coach K than being genuine

Agreed. I was expecting a lot more when I read the letter AFTER reading that description. Sorry but that was NOT a "remarkably endearing and heart-felt letter" by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, I thought it sounded a bit like a form letter. Yeah, it is a classy form letter but nothing more than that.

Sorry, that is not a "remarkably endearing" letter. It's a nice gesture to be sure and MJ was probably happy to get it, but as somebody who often has to recruit employees and who sometimes get "jilted" by those who choose to go elsewhere, this is SOP all the way. Only the most short-sighted employers would be childish enough to not reach out and wish someone well after having recruited them. You never want to burn bridges. This is especially true in industries as fickle as college athletics.

By the way, Coach K, "however" should be preceded by a semicolon as you use it in your letter.

P.S. Duke sucks
