HBL - Historical Basketball League.
Already secured 30-40 million
Plans to start in summer of 2020
It’s a summer league but with salaries of 50-150k, eligibility in the NCAA is gone.
Will offer some sort of college scholarship.
12 teams

Why wouldn’t this work? I think it will. They have to secure some quality coaches so they can sell the developmental side to the game and
Not just some glorified aau league. This is exactly what basketball needs.

Yawn. Nothing will ever replace college basketball, sorry...not gonna happen. People love it
You are correct. It will always be here. The quality of the product won’t. When they start losing money they will start paying kids. Might be to late by then

Unless they have a big money sponsor and a TV network giving them millions for broadcast rights, that league should last about one season.
Adidas ready to stick it to the ncaa and they got money. Get some quality coaches. Hell pitino and self they are already on the adidas payroll. Sponsors will come and the kids will already be there

No people do not love college basketball. People love college football. Only time people love college basketball is during the tournament, that’s it. College basketball as a whole is horrible and a joke.

Like gonzo said this won’t work. Too many people trying to do the same crap. Hell the AAF which actually got good ratings barely made payroll in WEEK 2. This will be lucky to last a full season. Although I could see a bunch of 2/3 star players taking advantage of this for a payday that they’d never see otherwise.

When does Adidas plan on starting a broadcasting company?

Until the networks give up on NCAA Basketball, no league will draw enough interest to sustain it.

Actually that was due to not having enough investors. That’s why the Carolina hurricanes owner went big

Fair enough. Plenty of coaches out there to draw these kids in. Nba coaches and assistants out there trying to make a name with..with nba connections. Also you have to start somewhere. Not saying you’ll get calipari first year. Keeps growing down the road you can. You just need these kids handlers and agents start to push these kids to this league. Just like they push these kids to duke or Kentucky or even yes LSU. When a system is so corrupt like the ncaa it’s doomed to fail. When they start losing money they will start paying these kids. Plain and simple

You have to start from somewhere lol. Get good coaches. Pay the kids. And the sponsors will come I promise you. Especially like an under armor who’s trying to find a way in. I mean aau teams get a ton of money. What’s the difference?? Exactly none. Bagleys got millions for an aau team. It will happen again. I think bringing a shoe company in is vital

The G League is going to be the league that puts the dent into college basketball. No start-up league will. The G League is offering $125,000 contracts to elite prospects out of high school this summer. The G League will only continue to improve and offer more money.

Schools like UK, Duke, UNC, KU, heck even Xavier have a budget and facilities that are MILES ahead of anything this league can offer.

If these kids want to ride a bus to games, eat on their own dime, live in an apartment that they have to pay for and train in facilities no where near as nice as what these schools offer, then have at it.

Until ESPN, CBS, Fox Sports, etc. back away from the NCAA and start negotiations with the NBA to broadcast basically a minor league, I can't see it taking over.

OK.......a season and a half.......

I’m not saying this particular endeavor is going to work, but with college basketball being attacked from so many different angles, the NCAA better do something to improve their product or they are going to suffer immensely.

Basketball talent is a very valuable commodity and the remarkable thing is that in a culture like America people have been forced to give it away for much less than it is worth for so many years. But clearly those days are coming to a close.

People who think college basketball isn't at the threshold of enormous change are like baseball fans in the early 1970s who figured it'd go on forever with a city like Cincinnati locking up Pete Rose and Tony Perez and Johnny Bench for ten years while they matured into the Big Red Machine.

I don't know how things will evolve but I doubt very much if any kid good enough to get paid to play basketball -- even at a minor league level - is playing in college in 5-7 years from now.

Where is the demand for a basketball minor league? The NBA already has it and it's not popular at all. Minor leagues are entirely dependent on attendance for their revenue (they'll never be on TV), and the NCAA has already saturated the market there - with 350 teams spread over the nation - and that's just Division 1!

Read quotes from minor league team owners in baseball, they can't market their leagues on the players - because the second they get good, they're gone to the big leagues! So minor league teams have to market in on the teams themselves to get consistent revenue streams. Huh, I wonder who does that already better than any minor league team could? Could it be the colleges with regional attachments and pumping out alumni by the thousands yearly? The same colleges that have built up fan followings since before professional basketball even existed. The NCAA has the market cornered until the colleges themselves lead a mutiny, its that simple.

Not as much as they once did.

Both attendance and TV ratings have been steadily falling for years now. And there's no evidence of that trend stopping.

As others have said, I really don’t see this going anywhere. It’s trying to do what the G-league is already doing and the G-league is actually affiliated with the NBA which is where everyone actually wants to be so it will be looked at as another step below by the players.

Very few will care to buy tickets to the games and even fewer will buy apparel for the teams. I just don’t see it making any money.

Yes, we need these kids out of college basketball. They have all these options, choose college basketball, then people claim they're exploited. No one forces these kids to go to college.

It’s been mentioned here before, but ppl have natural connections to universities even when they didn’t attend due to state loyalties etc. that is really hard to replicate with a start up league.

I agree with what you are saying but as a whole college basketball isn’t liked that much anymore.

It'll have money and get a few kids, but NCAA has major networks locked up. There are no compete clauses in those deals.

It also wont have the tradition college ball does. Think of how UK has passed through so many of our bloodlines. A startup like this cant match that.

Now if you got 10-12 major colleges to pull out of the NCAA and do this, then you've got something going.

Nope, yet another one of your terrible takes. This isn't going to work because too few people will care, Adidas throwing money at it won't fix that initial problem.

Yeah ESPN and CBS won't touch this with the amount of money they have invested in the NCAA. Any network that broadcasts NBA games will likely steer clear of it as well like TNT and the Fox Sports Regional channels. The only way it might work is to have their own streaming network that is free to watch the games on, but that will take big money advertisers to make that work. So that one year of getting paid won't have anyone really even seeing you play. So say goodbye to the big payday in the future.

How many developmental leagues are we going to have? So now we're supposed to believe that recruits 30 through 80 are gonna go to this scrub league for 50k a year? And hope that they can beat out NCAA, G-League, and Euro players? No chance. I'm really not even sure the G-League will have as big of an impact on college ball as some think.. certainly not this.

You might not care. Doesn’t mean others won’t. It’s an alternative. And managed properly and with the right connections to agents and sponsors it can take off. You might hate me but don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.

The players would take the money and go but how does the league stay solvent? Who is their target fan base? College fans won’t migrate to that, a superstar is going straight to the NBA. So there goes the star factor, I don’t know who goes to the games. They would have to rely on a lucrative tv contract to pay expenses.

Same way aau exists and survives and thrives

There are way more kids who play AAU compared to how many will be involved in this. Teams pay to play in those tournaments and they’re rarely viewed on TV.

I don’t see how they are comparable??

They compare cause you are comparing aau which has been around for decades to a brand new league. Ridiculous. Jesus Christ rome wasn’t built in a day. Pay the kids have good sponsors ideally shoe companies power aid whatever. Get good with agents to funnel kids to their league. Have capable coaches. Hey tai hey skj. Come on over we pay you. Hey 5 star kid. We pay you and we take care of school too. If fultz can go to Washington and Simmons and shaq to LSU. Not really hard. Hey billy Preston come on down. Hey Bowen come on down. Hate your college coach and don’t want to sit out a year... come on down. Ain’t hard.
