Totally gets it wrong. People don't hate the Duke players they mention because they are white, it's because K teaches them to flop and slap the floor. The reason there are so many of them compared to other schools is that Duke has had way more white players than other schools at the elite level. There are plenty of schools I am sure with a lot of white players, but like the article says, if you aren't good enough, people don't care enough to hate you.

And they don't hate the black players as much as the white ones they mention because they tend to be way more athletic (with some exceptions), so they don't rely as much on the refs bailing them out for a lack of quickness or being able to defend the right way. And even if they do flop some, the fact that they have legit skills in other areas helps deflect some of that hatred.

It has everything to do with duke and Coach K. The way they play and act. It has nothing to do with them being white. How they flop and are dirty and cocky. I find it more interesting that in a time when black players control the sport in droves, coach K is able to hand pick white guys out yearly. Show him 100 players, with two white guys in it, and he will manage to get at least one of them, if not both. Of course, this goes largely ignored.

Duke has had their share of cocky white players that are dirty, drama queens. Grayson Allen fits that mold for sure but I thought that all the way back when UK played Duke. I think I even commented on here he was the Dukiest Duke player I've ever seen.

Wouldn't surprise me if Coach K almost pushes this type of behavior so they can carry on this portrayal in the media and with the fans

The funny thing is the whole Duke aura started in the 1978 season when they made it to the finals against us. Spanarkel, Gimminski, Banks, Dennard and Bender were a little like our Unforgettables for them in that they captivated the country with their run to the Championship game against the big bad UK team. They became the "Darlings" of college basketball.

And what gave them the over the top appeal was the fact Gene Banks (who was black) and Dennard and Bender (both white) were like brothers and the country saw them as a symbol of racial unity back then. From that point on Duke took on this identity as the clean cut, goody goody darlings of the ncaa always mixing black and white players and winning with them.

After a while that appeal morphed from a sentiment of Darlings to a sentiment of "Elitist Punks" somewhere along the line and I think most outside fans apply that to their program as a whole, white or black.
