In about 20 percent of our threads the Barnhart debate flairs up.

I found this April 2022 ranking of athlete programs’ on-the-field performances, and UK leads the SEC, and the SEC has the most Top 25 schools:

“CONFERENCE
At the conference level, the SEC leads all Division I conferences with seven institutions in the top-25 – Kentucky (9th), Arkansas (10th), Tennessee (11th), Alabama (12th), Ole Miss (14th), Florida (21st) and LSU (24th).”

Of course, with that many strong programs in the SEC, it likely prevents one school from breaking through to Number One.

Says points awarded on NCAA championships results; .e., not conference results. Net, not sure how a strong conference hurts that.

Because the majority of your season is playing conference opponents, so a difficult conference makes it more difficult to get enough wins to make the NCAA championship. Just look at UK baseball this year. They lead the country in wins over top 10 and top 25 teams, but couldn’t even make the tournament to earn director’s cup points.

Among all the rest, we battle multiple Top 25 programs to get to national championships.

Example: how many national championships might Georgia have won absent Bama’s power in football?
