Cummings, Bates and Upshaw

You forgot Dingle, who according to some may be the best of all of them.

Plus, coaches and players are speaking quite highly of true freshman Josh Kattus.

So, yes, even though they haven't shown the production of individuals like Whalen or Tamme, this group appears to be the most talented "group" of TEs ever at UK.

Yep. Dingle and Kattus has gotten rave reviews from the coaches and media that have been to practices

Are we as deep at TE as ever?
Everything is relative. For sure, we are deep at TE. But if Coach Scan uses "12 personnel" and other multiple-TE sets, then there should be lots of playing time for all these TEs.

Multiple TE sets are good when you are playing against opponents using the 3-4 defense, because the TEs can neutralize the pass rush of the outside Lbackers. It can be confusing for a defense because you can put one of your TEs into presnap motion and get him open easily. Upshaw or Cummings would be ideal TEs to put into presnap motion as pass receivers.

Just going by Marrow's and Stoops comments about Dingle it sounds like he will be one of the new stars. Seems to be the total package at that position. Will be fun seeing so many TE's being used.

This may be especially valuable this season with new starting OTs on both sides...especially when the 2-deep at OT on both sides is pretty green.

I'm excited to see what Scan can scheme up for the TE room. Lots of pieces with a variety of skills. No reason that room shouldn't catch 50+ balls this season. Will help with the running game, too.

That last bit is what I’m hoping for the most, especially with C-Rod out and Jefferson unproven at this level. Smoke is a finesse back so he will need all the help he can get.

I think so too. But even if we were not starting two new OTackles, 12 personel is still great for motioning one of the TEs and getting him into a route without being bumped and delayed at the snap. There are two ways to make a receiver like Upshaw or Cummings as dangerous as he can be. Motion him before the snap, or run the play action and disguise him as a blocker at the snap. Using presnap motion will give Upshaw more route options. This is best done out of 12 personnel, which Scan saw a lot with the 49ers. If we start two freshman receivers, Key and Brown as Stoops discussed yesterday, using the TEs becomes even more important.
