More accurate analysis than anyone around here. Lots of respect for Cube.
I have always respected Cubelic. Right combination of powers of observation, inquisitiveness, love of football, and nonbias.
This particular analysis is a hodgepodge. The first 7-8 minutes is fluff- Wickles Pickles, family predictions for the NCAA Tournament, and so forth. Cubelic is spot on in his discussion of Coach Coen's return. He claims Leary is more limited this spring than he actually is, but he is generally right about Leary and the backup QB situation. I enjoyed his interesting discussion of Ray Davis and Jutahn McClain, but I don't think he has gotten the memo yet on Jamarion Wilcox. He claims we are "deep" at WR, which is a very premature assessment IMO. Maybe we are "deep" but some young, inexperienced WRs will really have to step up huge for that to happen. What I know for sure is that Dane Key and Barion Brown are very, very good, and TRob can play better than he played in 2022. Generally, I think the discussion of our OL is spot on, including the likelihood of one more inbound OL transfer in May.
Interestingly, Cubelic is higher on Josiah Hayes, and not as high on Silver, than you have been. He is probably right about Silver being big but not very athletic. Overall I found his analysis of our DL and LBs spot on. I think he is underestimating the depth of our secondary, but it is entirely fair for him to question the secondary depth until some of our younger players (especially Afari, Phillips, Hairston, Hardaway, and Dunn) get more established and step up. Not specifically discussed is the likelihood that multitalented Jordan Lovett is headed for an all SEC career, as I believe he is.
I think Cubelic's discussion of our coaching staff is the best part of the entire podcast. He is so detailed and correct about our coaches, even including the younger coaches Conrad and Jackson. Our fans could learn a whole lot about our coaching staff by listening to this. Cubelic's discussion of our 2023 schedule is sharp, and I think he will probably be largely right.
Overall, a better early discussion of UK's 2023 football season than I have heard elsewhere. But most media analysts have not even thought about 2023 football yet, especially with the NCAA Basketball Tournament underway. So Cubelic's preoccupation with football throughout the calendar year is refreshing, especially for someone like me who is frustrated with basketball and tired of all the contrived basketball hype.
