I went to the Chris Stapleton show last night at Kroger Field. They were selling beer. The youth groups were still manning the concession stands, beer was separate. The stadium is still standing. There wasn't chaos in the stands. There weren't thousands of car wrecks from all the drunk drivers.

Why can't we have beer at football games?

How many attended? Live near the stadium and we had tons of cars parked in our neighborhood, just like a home football game. Strangely, we could not hear the music, which was a surprise.

I've made the same argument on football, or hoops for that matter, vs. concerts. Senseless. Tells me there's something besides facts at play. Maybe it's threats from the same Pub politicians that hold up gambling & medical MJ even.

Oh yea, how big a problem has alcohol sales been at SEC stadiums that allow it? My guess is that it's less than at those that don't.

I was always under the impression it was an SEC thing for years. I know that’s been lifted in recent years but just like the post above with gambling and Mary Jane, Kentucky is slow to move on anything. It’s as if the people of Kentucky are of sound enough mind to fight wars and vote in elections but not sound enough mind to make good life choices.

It's not a law. Barnhart says they wouldn't have beer because the fans don't want it. Except for the rich fans in the suites.
I was vague, I apologize. I'm saying the policy makers in Kentucky. I know in the case it's the admin. at UK, I've bought beer at concerts in Rupp and the Yum. I was only making the point, whenever policy makers in Kentucky get a chance to protect us from ourselves, they are more than happy to oblige.

OT- how did the concert and the performers sound in Kroger? Overall thoughts? Will it be a regular venue for music and concerts?

I think the Stapleton concert was a test. If it went well, they'll start selling beer at football games.

How much were the beers?

I thought it was great. Sounded great, Willie killed it as always, and the way it was set up it wasn’t super loud outside the stadium so I don’t think it bothered the neighbors too much.

as far as a regular venue, I’m not sure how many artists could sell it out.

Sounds like the rest of the nation. Boo on them because they have money.
That's a crazy comment. In all honesty why should only a select few get to purchase beer at Kroger field and the rest do not?

IMO if that frat boy piece of crap had not drunk drove and killed the kid at a UK game in 2018 beer sales would have already been happening

Slowly but surely it will get here for the unwashed masses outside the lux boxes/club seating.

I think beer sales are coming. It's probably near the top of the list of things UK brass talks about every season about this time as they prep for a new football, and athletic year in the fall.

Would agree with the fact that the accident outside the stadium a few years back more than likely stalled things.

I would imagine the alcohol sales numbers coming back from the concert will be eye-popping and someone is going to say "hey guys and gals...let's multiply that by 7-8 home games..."

He didn’t get drunk at the game. That doesn’t have anything to do with it. He was driving drunk, ran off the road and hit the boy. The boy was walking to the game but he could have been walking anywhere. Beer sales policy at a game didn’t cause it and wouldn’t have prevented it.

Facts are a kid got run over, at UKs campus, on a UK football gameday, by a piece of filth who was at the time an underage UK student

Could have happened anywhere. But it DID happen at a UK football game with a UK frat boy under 21. What we know about Barnhart and his reluctance at allowing beer sales at UK events, this was the worst possible combination of events.

I didn't mean to offend. Well the facts are that the kid got drunk at a party away from the stadium hours before a football game and drove drunk, ran off the road and killed the child on Alumni Drive across from Scoville Road. He was walking to the game with his dad. This happened before the game and there was no alcohol sold at the stadium. I am in no way defending the driver but I fail to see any connection between the idea that beer sales for general admission attendees at the game has anything to do with this tragedy. It is an unsound argument, furthermore I fine it hypocritical that UK allows alcohol sales of all types in the luxury sections of the stadium and not the general admission areas. If this is a moral or statutory issue it should be applied to all people equally. I also really have no horse in this race since I wouldn't buy alcohol at a game anyway. I had a few illicit bourbon and cokes mixed in the student section 50 years ago but didn't see the point, just party after the game.

Hell, I know I am in the minority, but I would bring back the Beer Barrell for the UT game, tradition ended more than 20 years ago due to a tragic accident, but it should still be resurrected.

80% of the tailgaters at any given UK game are drinking in the parking lot, it is really silly not to sell beer at the games - what exactly are you trying to prevent?

Oh, it is pretty simple and really not crazy. Everything has a price. In most of the world, if you have money, you are able to afford more things. If you are unhappy about the alcohol situation at Kroger Field, get yourself one of the suites and your wishes may be granted.

Prevent? Nothing. Showing wokeism is what it's about.

While it is correct the tragedy in 2018 had nothing to with drinking at a game, just the circumstances and involvement of any alcohol alone was more than enough for Mitch to shelve the idea for almost half a decade.

Beers at the concert sold for $13.00/16oz beer. I bought four and decided I’d quit drinking for the night lol. $52.00+ tip is a bit crazy, so if that’s how the price will be at the games, won’t matter to me one bit, I’ll continue with my flask of Wilderness Trail and be just fine! And yea, concert was ok, glad I had the opportunity to see ol’ Willie Nelson live!

I'm buying a beer here not a suite. The beer is $10.

I am 100% a proponent of the beer sales. Make family sections like we had at Thoroughblades games. Reality is anyone who wants to drink already is. Would I be more apt to forego doing bourbon and buy one or two overpriced beers? Yeah, probably. But me personally, I get my drinking in before the game. If someone has some bourbon around I may take a nip or two. The teetotallers may not be wrong about boorish behavior, but people are already drunk and drinking at games. The only thing this changes is revenue....money we can put back in to football to keep ascending the ladder.

Here's a compromise. How about we put the family section on the home side of the stadium. Let's put all of us rowdy drinkers on the visiting side and give those Tennessee and Louisville boys a real Kentucky welcome 😉

Especially on a hot day, I would maybe buy 1 or 2 beers like I would at a Reds game, but too much trouble to walk up and down 28 steps more than once to get a beer during the game and lines too long at halftime. Any chance they would have drink vendors going up and down the sections?

Absolutely. FWIW I went to Saturdays Reds game v StL. A craft beer (20 or 22oz but still) $18.25. My buddy got Bud tall boy, with souvenir coozie, $22.

I'd argue for most folks, they'd probably opt to get all their drinking done beforehand and instead of bringing bourbon in, would get 1 or 2 beers and be done instead of taking shots of liquor and being worse off. Students wouldn't, but I'd rather just have a beer to sip on than shooting bourbon mid game.

I do think family sections is a good idea. I understand folks who want to enjoy the game with their kids and grandkids and don't want to deal with us rowdy folks. And conversely, I want my section go be cheering and rowdy, not sitting on their hands. We can't we accommodate everyone? I want all UK fans to bring able to have a good time.

With the disaster that was re doing almost the entire stadiums season ticket layout in 2015, i cannot imagine them trying to implement family non drinking section seating

If someone drinks too much & isn't behaving themselves, text to Blue Coat safety to come haul them away

The way I see it, it’s going to happen. UK only grosses from football operations to rank 31st nationally (we’re probably top 20 for the entire athletic dept.). With the advent of NIL and with OK and Texas coming into the SEC, the hounds of war are cut loose and any money making means will require exploitation to be competitive

drunk frat boys and tea-totaler sensibilities soon won’t matter
