Based on what Calipari, Pitino, & Tubby have done these past 10 years as coaches. If they were like high school recruits, what star rating would you give each coach? My ratings for them would be.

Calipari 5-Star
Pitino 4-Star
Tubby 2-Star

Agree or disagree

I think Cal comes out the winner no matter how you do it but I think it would be more fair to take each coaches best 10 years or their time at UK if it is coaching ability you are judging.

Cal's best 10 years/teams in reverse chronologically order: 2015 UK, 38 wins, 2014 UK 29 wins, 2012 UK 38 wins, 2011 UK 29 wins, 2010 UK 35 wins, 2008 Memphis 38 wins, 2007 Memphis 33 wins, 2006 Memphis 33 wins and 1995 UMASS, 35 wins, 94 UMASS, 29 wins. Of those he went to 10 Elite 8s, 6 Final Fours and has the 1 title.

Pitino's best 10 years/ teams in chronological order: 1987 Providence 25 wins, 1992 UK 29 wins, 1993 UK 30 wins, 1995 UK 28 wins, 1996 UK 34 wins, 1997 UK 35 wins, 2005 UL 33 wins, 2009 UL 31 wins, 2012 UL 30 wins, and 2013 UL 35 wins. Of these years he went to 10 Elite 8's, 7 Final Fours and has 2 titles. You could sub 2014 UL for 2009 and then his worst would be a Sweet 16 loss to UK.

Tubby's best 10 years/teams in chronological order: 94 Tulsa 23 wins, 95 Tulsa 24 wins, 96 UGA 21 wins, 98 UK 35 wins, 99 UK 28 wins, 01 UK 24 wins, 02 UK 22 wins, 03 UK 32 wins, 04 UK 27 wins, 05 UK 28 wins. 9 Sweet 16's, 3 Elite 8's, 1 Final Four, 1 title. Worst finish was 2nd round losses at UK in 00 and 04.

Obviously you can fiddle with these lists and they are subjective. I could have just used Tubby's whole UK tenure, but I thought I'd be fair and honor his Sweet 16 runs at Tulsa and UGA. Cal's 2009 Memphis team won 33 but only made it to the Sweet 16. One could also make an argument for the 94 UK team on Pitino's list, but losing in the 2nd round to Marquette left them off mine. I think it is pretty clear Tubby is way back in 3rd. Overall for their careers I think you have to give the slight edge to Pitino over Cal, but Cal is clearly vastly superior in the present. If Cal wins another title he jumps Pitino with ease IMO.

I must be missing something but how is it that Tubby has zero Elite 8's, Final Fours and Championship Game Appearances if we won it all his first year in 1998? Is this because he did it with Pitino's recruits? If this is the case then Kevin Ollie doesn't get credit for UConn's last championship either...correct?

Aside from that, I generally agree with your assessment.

Oh...now I see what he did. See I thought he probably was doing that but Cal hasn't exactly been with us 10 years yet so...

OP is looking at the last 10 years.

Only K has numbers that can match Calipari, and he has had his share of short seasons.

Everyone else is looking up to this group; I don't include the UNC sham that is going on....the NCAA should feel the same way.

Kevin Ollie is a hack......made me sick to watch his post game interview when UCONN won. Rather than take the national title with humility and humbleness he said "winning titles is what we do, we cut down nets" what a joke!

I will say this loved Pitino when he was here but also the dirty bird fans want to talk about INTERGRITY Pitino show none when was looking for a collage job.He knew how much it would hurt the cat fans when he decided to take the job in Louisville and even now when he talks about the Wildcats he does not hold back his dislike for the fans who once put him on a pedestal which he deserved for the great job of putting the basketball program back were it needed to be

I'm afraid I'd have to give Pitino a 5 star rating, as much as that pains me. Assuming the top 5-8 coaches get 5-star ratings, name the other coaches who have been more successful. K, Cal, Self.... everything after that is kind of a toss up. He's got a title, a FF we ended, a S16 that would have went further if we didn't end it, a few E8s... he's doing well, honestly. He'd be much more highly regarded if we didn't consistently abuse him every year.

Pitino is a POS he wanted Kentucky to name a coach that wound not own his sorry a$$.It was his worst nighmare when Kentucky name Coach Cal to be the man in Lexington.

Tubby is nothing more than a slightly above average coach who caught lightening in a bottle in 1998.
