Last week, I did a comparison of all of Stoops’ teams point totals surrendered to our 3 non-major opponents.
And this was pretty easy to update, to do the math for our non-majors and Vandy’s result added in for each season.
So, having all the data (scores) by our 2023 G5/FCS opponents this early, and now also Vandy, how does 2023 stack up for the full Stoops’ tenure?
The list gives total opponents scoring, then divided by 4 for the game average. (2020 is excluded because we played no G5 or FCS schools).
2023: 62 points scored; 15.50 average.
2022: 60 points scored: 15.00 average;
2021: 66 points scored: 16.50 average;
2019: 62 points scored: 15.50 average;
2018: 60 points scored: 15.00 average;
2017: 74 points scored: 18.50 average;
2016: 112 points scored: 28.00 average;
2015: 91 points scored: 22.75 average;
2014: 38 points scored: 9.50 average;
2013: 78 points scored: 19.50 average.
Look at the bizzare consistency since 2018, when Kentucky established itself as an annual Top 20 defensive program. Our total points allowed Vandy and our three non-P5 has been exactly sixty two points two of the five seasons, exactly 60 points two of the five seasons, and 66 in the other.
Wow. I did not expect that kind of consistency over a six year period and five full seasons.
Also, notice 2014: they frequently “say”when doing averages, throw out the largest and smallest. Any how you cut it, Zadarius and Bud’s Senior year had a pretty special defense, at least against non P5.
And now that we have 4 games in 2023, we can say that we have some statistical indication that our team’s defense will compare favorably (identically??) with our annual Top 20 finishes in scoring defense since 2018.
