Coach makes every wrong move...or he is snake bit

We would have definitely been in the CWS last year with a different coach. And his handling of UK's many injuries this season has been atrocious.

i don't believe that Mingione didn't make the CWS last year ecause of his coaching. He has made a number of mistakes this year that have cost us a handful of games. The biggest was not taking out Haake after 110 pitches when he walked the bases loaded vs Alabama. The next batter hit a grand slam. In my opinion, UK does a poor job of updating injuries to players that reflect on the coach when certain players don't show up in the lineup. Don't give me that privacy thing because they don't follow those guidelines in football and basketball. By keeping quiet about players not in the lineup it leads to speculation that players are in the coach's doghouse instead of a small uppdate that a player is injured.

That's asinine. We have one Super Regional in our entire history... Mingione got us there.

He improved our hitting exponentially in 2017, and our pitching. Henderson wasn't doing that and had barely made the SEC tournament. If we make the tournament this year it will be the first time EVER that we make back to back NCAA appearances.

Coaching staff does not have to give nor do they owe fans any explanation or make a statement on why a player isnt playing, injury or not. If the player has an injury, it does not have to go public. They have privacy rights.

Like I said, these are real people with real lives.

2nd year as a HC and on the job training in the SEC. I think he’s doing pretty good. Perfect no but all young coaches grow into the job. Unfortunately mistakes are the best way to learn. Effort and enthusiasm present. Give him some time to gain experience in the driver’s seat and a healthy group.

I disagree about privacy being abused when you can just update the fans by announcing that such and such is out because of injury. That does not violate anyone's rights because you are not disclosing what the injury is. As for Bluegrass Blake go back in your hole.

Baseball is a ton of strategy. Not disclosing injuries can be beneficial because a team might make a decision believing you have someone available and you don't.

No real reason to disclose. No advantage to it.

But depending on who Cohen brings in, the new coach is entitled to bring in his own assistants which may or may not include Henderson.

Yep, and Henderson may want another shot at being an HC. Still, they think he's done well enough, especially after the UF sweep to warrant being their pitching coachm

I am a little concerned about development of the young guys. The guys that carried us this year are all Henderson's recruits. In addition I think we play small ball too often gibing up an out to get a guy to 2nd. I have no problem bunting a guy over to 3rd with less than 2 outs , but bunting him to 2nd too often is just giving away an out.

In my defense i posted this thread right after bunting Cottham on sat with 6-3..terrible move...probably a little harsh but a manager has to know in game situations. With our depleted pitching you gotta score 15 if you can one run was not gonna cut it.

He bunted two into scoring position. In that situation, the offense must score at least one if not two. The point there was to add insurance runs and to get something. Had Cottam ground into a double play we would have bemoaned not bunting them over to avoid the double play.

We are talking about basically all freshmen and JUCO kids. Our recruiting class was the highest it had been in like 5 years, and this year is up there again. Henderson was decent at recruiting and seemed to get home run recruits but couldn't keep most of them and that would severely hinder our recruiting. Still, must give the man credit in that he did know pitching talent. Unfortunately, he wasn't great at building a bullpen full of it.

I think Henderson make up his mind on certain players never seeing action in a UK uniform!
I'm glad we have coach Ming and think Hendo should stay as MSU pitching coach.

You have to have a feel for each and every game you manage...im not sure coach has that..just my opinion

Especially early innings like the first...

Do I agree with every decision the staff makes? No. Do I agree with every decision Cal or Stoops makes? No. Does my staff at work agree with every decision I make? No.

I like our staff. 2 seasons. 2 NCAA tourneys. Period.

And it is much easier to nitpick from home when the decisions are played out so quickly.

Many if the decisions look genius when they work and dumb when they don't. So, it's easy to be critical of the ones that don't work. Still, that doesn't mean it's a bad decision. The cottam bunt looks bad because we failed to execute. If Becker hits a single and we score two runs then that move is great because we go up 8-3 and one swing of the bat can't beat us. If cottam swings and hits into double play then Ming looks silly for not bunting to avoid the DP. It's all pretty relative to the success or failure.

False...

Unless you kidnapped Brendan McKay, did a Men In Black memory eraser on everyone, and put him in a blue-and-white uniform.

Ha - Jeff that comment was pure tongue in cheek. I'm a big Mingione supporter but think it's hilarious that every decision gets second guessed on here - despite the number of wins he is stacking up.

Way too early to say about development with a coach who hasn’t competed Year 2 IMHO. That won’t be known for another year (or two).

Gotcha. I gotta replace the batteries in my sarcasm detector.

Jeff I totally understand what you are saying however I would think after Year2 there would be other underclassmen position players contributing other than Collett who has been hurt the greater part of two years.

Hard for the youngsters to get time when the roster is loaded with Juniors and Seniors. They had to replace a lot, quickly and JUCO was the route he took. You have to give him some time.

I think technically his first real recruiting class is the freshman class. He was hired in June of 2016, actually after the MLB draft, so he really doesn't even have any sophomores on the roster.

Key word "after" here. I think you'll see whether or not that's occurring next fall.

Kentucky is going through a rough patch, offensively. No doubt about that. But the Cats have one of the top-rated offenses in the entire country. Outside of 3B or RF depending on where Heyer is playing, there's not really anyone to replace with an underclassman.

Don't you think Shinn is our future RF?

Shinn or Johnson can be. They haven't hit their strides this season but often times JUCO guys need a year to adjust. Look at Heyer. Barely played a year ago and this year 18 home runs.

Watch out for incoming freshman Justin Olson. The kid has hit 14 HRs this year.

We are going to have to watch out for a lot of new guys. I don't know what will happen next year, but there should be plenty of opportunities.

I am guessing that Aklinski will return to play CF. Hopefully Shinn and Johnson will return (not transfer). Jaren Shelby and Breydon Daniel are both JUCO transfers that should be in the mix. Cam Hill will return. Garrett Hastings, Tanner Johnson and Spencer Harbert were all redshirt Freshmen this season. And there are always HS infielders who end up in the outfield at the college level. So there should be alot of competition this Fall for the corner OF spots.
