As much of a 'throw the ball over the middle'/'utilize the TE more' guy I am, it's insane to set some target on the number of times we 'ought' to throw to the TE. CJ is good player and needs to be utilized within the system as a legitimate weapon. He's not Jimmy Graham, though. He's not a huge mismatch (yet) against every team we're going to play. While PT didn't throw to CJ Saturday, I thought he worked the middle pretty consistently on slants to the WRs. Granted, he had a couple of passes that were nearly (and should have been) picked off when he locked onto his receiver, but he didn't JUST throw outside the numbers like he has in some previous games.
What I want to see is PT have the time to find the best guy to throw to, whoever that may be. I get really frustrated when he seemingly looks at only one guy at the snap and then throws into a crowd or inaccurately when there are other receivers who seem to be (or should be) more open. That's on him and on Dawson to correct those tendencies. I thought the two screens to Horton were well set up, well executed and worked wonderfully. I'd like to see more of them. Horton seems to be pretty good once he's up to full speed - he just doesn't hit full speed as quickly as Jo Jo or Boom and, as a result, the holes in the line close just a tick too quickly on him many times. He looked great on the screens, though. Ran hard, made a couple guys miss, used his blockers well.
CJ is an integral part of the offense. He will and should be used in various roles. He is not some superstar that cannot be guarded, however. When he's open, PT ought to get him the ball. When he's not, PT ought to look elsewhere and not force it. There are probably at least 2-3 times a game (even Saturday) where it appeared to me that CJ was open but that doesn't mean he was the MOST open receiver in the route. Hopefully, PT threw that way rather than stubbornly trying to target one particular guy.
