Charles Matthews with a BOLD Prediction

He DM'd me the lottery numbers last week, so I bought a scratch off. I have been trying to pay that ticket off ever since.

He's one of the major key to determining the outcome of our season.

If he can flourish at the 3 by giving us transition and spacing in half court, the chances greatly increase.

Sweet! Love the confidence! Remember he played AAU ball with Tyler Ulis and that was a big reason he committed early to UK.

As long as we don't expect 40-0, I think this is going to be a great season. This is going to be a super fun, high energy team full of great personalities and a lot of swag. Can't wait to see them in Brooklyn this year.

This team probably wont win a championship, but I think this will be the most fun of any team Cals had at UK. 2 GREAT shooters and distributers at PG, 2 GREAT finishers in Lee and Poythress, and a complete wildcard in Skal that could take this team to the next level.

Love the attitude of our guys for next season. Ulis, Poy, and Lee are all confident that they can win a title, Matthews is confident that they can win a title, Mulder is confident that they can win a title, Skal is confident in winning it all, and Briscoe is confident about anything and everything. Hell, even Willis and Hawkins are confident.
I can't wait.

There's a handful of schools that I have no problem hearing players say this about every single year. We're one of them, obviously.

Of course every team probably won't win a title, even when they're an overwhelming favorite compared to any other particular team, but if you come to play at one of the elite schools in the country, that absolutely should be your focus even knowing you'll likely fall short in a given year.

It's also no accident that Ulis was pissed at falling short of the hardware, Matthews says we'll win it next year, and Briscoe said that lack of confidence wasn't even in his vocabulary (or something to that effect). Give me as many talented Chicago and NY/NJ kids as we can land. Those cats are just a different breed.

I love the confidence too; but, had to raise my eyebrows a bit after hearing Briscoe proclaim himself the best 3-point shooter in the nation. Talk about setting the bar high! I guess my point is, have confidence, but let your play (and stats) do your talking.

i think cal is going to turn him loose defensively. and i actually like our length just fine on the perimeter. what compares this to '11 is not so much the players as the attitude you feel around bbn. after the national attention in '10 and '15, the following year it was just go out there and play. never give up, and turn it up defensively.

turned out great. i love that we have big game experience returning, and that our freshman have all highlighted their desire to win a title. we won't have last year's odds, but you just get the feeling this team is going to work their collective butt off.

our roster is full of energy players. i'd even add willis to that group. his off the ball defense between the block and three point line is actually very good. he has good anticipation.

it's going to be a fun team to root for. i'm very happy about (and for) mulder.

Yea, and then he went out and won the 3-point contest at the BallIsLife allstar game.

Again, love the confidence, but I don't believe all the best shooters in the nation were in that contest, and I believe he said it after he won. (and walked off leaving 2 racks of balls unshot, sure that he had made enough already to win).

I do not want my comments to come off like I don't like Briscoe; I really love his game. Guess we just chalk it up to youthful brashness.

not sure you understand the kid's confidence. comes off brash to you maybe. i love it though and it helps him on the court. he's not a "shooter" he's just a big shot maker. the kid can score and he will make his share of threes too.

Most forget Matthews was the #12 rated player on Rivals when he committed. He was injured and didn't play AAU for awhile then took some time getting back up to speed. Many posters are underestimating this kid, he is a baller.

Rarely does a NCAA champion gain a title without a Chicago-area kid. Just look at the recent wave of Chicago-based talent that helped their respective teams win it all:

2015 - Jahlil Okafor
2014 - Ryan Boatright
2013 - Wayne Blackshear
2012 - Anthony Davis
2011 - none
2010 - Jon Sheyer
2009 - Bobby Frasor
2008 - Sherron Collins

Even our last three national championship teams featured Chicago-based kids as their best players: Davis in '12; Mohammed in '98; Walker in '96.

Seeing how badly people rooted against us, how SEC teams only got up to play us, how we got slighted by the SC in the brackets... I hope this team just throttles opponents. No remorse. Iv'e said this for years and I've wanted it for years: if we are gonna be painted as the bad guys and treated like the bad guys, lets just start acting like it. I'd love to see physical 80's-esque basketball, confident, borderline cocky interviews, and just hammering opponents.

I'm sure plenty here will moan about it, oh well. I think it'd be great.

I like it....at least he is ready for the fishbowl of UK basketball and didn't run and hide at a lesser tier school like Mississippi State or California.

2016 - Ulis and Matthews doubles our odds, right?

For the superstitious among us... We still need a KY homegrown to play a prominent role for us to win it all as well...who's it going to be, Hawkins or Willis?

I hate guarantees of wins by players or fans. Its not worth spit and if it ends any other way you look like a complete idiot. I like modesty and letting your play do the talking. I hope he's right but no need for this. If a player at Duke did this everyone on here would be on full out attack mode.

Great post. Our best results combine Chicago players and in-state players. From a historical perspective, our best chances of winning are when we satisfy both halves of that recipe. NEVER have we won a title without legit contribution from at least one in-state player. It has never happened.

I believe, I believe, I'm ready for next year, I'm feeling better about this class, still could get some more players, could be a magical season without all the pressure:)

You don't think that the reason for that is that we ARE the state university, and have only 1 title since players really started going long distances to school has anything to do with this? I venture to guess this is as much happenstance as anything else, but I could be wrong.

Matthews has all the measurables to be an elite defender!

Our perimeter defense next year could be better than last year's by the end of the season, but it will need to be without the rim protectors that we had last year.

I do think that Matthews will be the surprise of the recruiting class!!

Clarksville, TN, will have to be close enough with Poy being from there.
