The scary thing is that our bullpen is really starting to struggle. I think that the opposing teams are starting to get better scouting reports on Lewis and Hjelle. Lewis has come in and taken on inherited runners, and he's struggled with getting outs. He hasn't given up a single run in SEC play, but he has given up a good number of inherited runs. Hjelle has an outstanding overall ERA, but his ERA in league play is now 5.87, and opponents are hitting .342 against him. I think these two will be excellent, but I think they really need to develop secondary pitches in order to step it up to the next level. Hopefully they can start hitting their spots and opposing hitters will struggle against them again.
Got to give Mahan some credit, he has significantly reduced his errors in league play. He only has 6 (same as Shelby). It still isn't great, but he has been more reliable there than at the beginning of the year. I like Heady's defense, but for a team struggling to hit, I just can't justify putting him on the field. He raised his average some this weekend but the guy literally just has 5 hits this season, and I think something like 2 of those hits were infield bunts. I just can't yet justify him playing against USC. Maybe allow him to play in the midweek once again and see how his bat responds. If he continues to do all right I might consider it, but that is probably also dependent upon how well Shelby is hitting. McNeil is definitely one opposing pitchers have figured out. Throw him a slider and he'll strike out and will look very bad doing so.
Anyway, lots of interesting stuff going forward... I honestly don't know how this team will do down the stretch. They could continue to play like crap, or play like they did against Florida. Who the heck knows.
