Carl Nassib..gay NFL player

Does this mean he still gets to use the same locker room as the rest of the team?

Just curious about how that works.

It says NFL. But has there been an active athlete in any of the 3 or 4 major American professional sports to come out?

I don't give a rats a$$ who you choose to sleep with.

I don't march in a parade or come out telling everyone in the world I love my wife and need additional attention for it.

When I was in the military it was clear a couple friends was and we did not care I would STILL to this day have their backs and STILL call them brothers and was proud to serve with them.

Exactly. Nobody cares. Just go live your life. Why do you even have to come out and say anything? It's like you're looking for validation.

Most of us don't care.... just go live your life as you say is okay by me...

but when it tips over to crazy "activism" i.e. infiltrating school curriculum for pre-teens of all ages, then most of us should speak up...

Even Sesame Street has introduced two gay Dads into its programming -- is this really necessary? What are we trying to do here?

It's not difficult to understand what "they're trying to do". They're trying to make kids that are on in that situation, ie 2 dads, 2 moms, feel ok about who they and their family are.

"Coming out" is simply the formal announcement that they're not going to hide who they are. They "announce" it because if they don't then someone else will make it a story when they're seen living their life as a gay person. They're also letting other people know that it's ok to be be gay and play a masculine, testosterone driven sport.

In short, they announce they're coming out in order to be able to control how it's announced, because if they don't announce it someone else will once they're seen with their significant other.

Yeah, I don't see it as any kind of attention grab... just clearing the air and taking some control of the situation. I'm pretty sure "So what?" is pretty consistent with the reaction he was seeking in making the announcement. He's not looking for congratulations.

He's living his life the way he sees fit, possibly trying to help pave the way for someone else to feel comfortable in their own skin. Don't see any issue with it. The comments about the locker room and staring at your sausage, I have several friends and family members that are gay, never seen any of them act the way straight men act when a hot girl walks by in a pair of yoga pants.

One of my wife's best friends is gay. Has been for years and had the same partner for as long as I can remember. I preface this because they are just like any other couple who is faithful in their relationship. They have eyes for no one else, and their relationship is very strong. They live in Atlanta, one is a DR. the other a computer tech. Have a very nice 3 story condo in a nice suburb. I had work training there about 15 years ago, one night I went to dinner with Darren just him and myself, hung out at his condo before and after. I was NEVER uncomfortable, great couple and really good people. Society is why MOST choose to live in the closet, not them, they are very comfortable in their skin and who they are.

For those who are critical, I would think that they would appreciate how he did it. He posted a short video in a "no big deal" kind of way and donated $100K to teen suicide prevention. He's the first, so it is worth noting.

Now, I hate the media b/c instead of celebrating this as more evidence that our great country is progressing, they will use this as evidence that our country is horrible. Most gay people just want to live their lives and be left alone, don't let the media ruin your perceptions of them.

Well stated.

Great for him.

There's probably more "closeted" players in the NFL too. People should be able to be themselves without society judging
There are plenty of positive role models for young gay people.

Buddy, then I have to say I don't think you have ever been to a gay bar. Lol

He's definitely not the only one considering there are nearly 1700 players on active NFL rosters (32 teams in the league, 53 on a roster). But credit to him for coming out. Hopefully it'll encourage others to do the same, and maybe society in general will be less judgmental knowing a gay player plays in the NFL. Then again, maybe not. I remember John Amechi (unsure if I spelled that right) came out and said he was gay while still playing in the NBA a number of years ago. Not much really changed since, aside from maybe Tim Hardaway learning about the struggles of gays after he went on Dan Lebatard's radio show, said he hated gay people and got raked through the coals for it.

Wow this isn't at all what I expected. Look at my beloved home state becoming understanding. Yay KY. It's nice to see the positive posts in support of Nasib. BTW his jersey has been the best selling NFL jersey since he made the announcement

It’s myopic and a lack of empathy that would cause an white heterosexual male to say you don’t need validation about your sexuality. Of course you don’t, because you are in the majority. Oppressed minorities don’t have your privilege and those who are brave enough come out to help those who come after. Try empathy, it’s a more appealing trait than myopic ignorance. You can do better.

The idea is to normalize their normal, so there are no more bigots who ask questions like this. One persons activism is another persons struggle to survive.

"Normal" is seeing a gay person once in a blue moon.

Because statistics.

The ratio of gay people on TV right now has to be 100x the actual ratio of gay people in real life.

My boss is gay. One of the coolest guys I've ever met. Him and I make gay jokes to each other all the time, him especially. That said, I worked for him for weeks (at the time, he was my boss' boss), and didn't know, or care. After I found out, I still don't care.

I never asked because... I don't care. Very few people do.

It's like LeBron last season claiming people anointed him the "washed king". Like, wtf? No they didn't. You're making up stuff because it magnifies whatever point you're trying to make.

You don't know anything about me first of all. And very few people nowadays could care less if someone's gay. Just go live your life. You don't need validation or special treatment just because you go against the norm.

I'm sure if you asked the player's teammates if they care that he's gay I bet you most would say no as long as he's not staring at their willies in the shower.

Oppressed majority is more like it. Lmao.

There is no oppression of minorities going on. Get out of your own head. Minorities have the advantage and have for at least 40 years. I'm tired of people crying about their privilege as "oppression"...

Who gets their college paid for?
Who has the benefit in hiring practices?

I haven't complained about it before and won't here, but if people keep bichin about their fake oppression I'll bring this up over and over again. For over a generation this has been given to minorities. If they're going to complain about it, it's time to take it away rather than throw more money that direction.

I chose not to take advantage of it when I could have. All people should have to make their own way. That's the only way everyone will understand real equality and change their mentality.

As far as anyone being gay needing to " come out" about it, ...ok. That's really 80s of you. Newsflash for the world, everyone knows there are gay people! Who are gay people hiding from at this point (besides themselves)?

Newsflash number 2, we are all different and we are all just people. No one gets out of here alive. We are all mortal

His sexual preferences are none of my business. Also don’t need to know how money donated either. That’s all his business. One day we will move past this stuff. What you do is your business.
