Can Someone Give Me the Scoop on Schlarman and the O-Line?

Can he not coach? Or is our talent that bad compared to SEC D-Lines?

I've seen some good run blocking at times this season, but our pass blocking is still awful, Swindle penalties, etc.

Is it the coaching or the talent?

And why did we not use a TE to help block on the edge?

-dont understand not using conrad et al as a blocker tonight...considering we did it in the first two games...and this is likely the best front 7 we will see all year.

I don't get it either. I'm hoping some football coaches on this board can explain it to me.

The evidence speaks for itself. 3 years now and we still have several bonehead penalties EVERY game and never know where pressure is coming from. He sucks.

I wish I knew the inside story on this...I'm really concerned about our O-Line.

The three 4 star OL commitments coming in next season will help long term. Hopefully a couple of them are able to redshirt.

its simply talent. we are upgrading at that position, maybe more so than any other. but some of these sec d lines are loaded with nfl talent. our oline just cant match up.

Stoops could have kept Summers, who wanted to stay. Stoops hired Schlarman on Neal Brown's recommendation. Another young, energetic coach that could relate to players and recruits. Which is Stoops' style. Some believe Stoops gave Brown a blank check to hire all offensive assistants at will, which could be true given how much Mitch Barnhart paid Brown to get him away from TTech. Now that Brown is gone, all of his hand picked assistants are inherited by Dawson. Eventually, Dawson might be given some control over his offensive staff. Schlarman was well liked as a Kentucky player and is well liked now as a coach. He is proving his worth as a recruiter. He snagged commitments from GAA, Leavitt, Jackson, Young. They sure won't make a change while Wills' recruitment is on the table. But this begs the question of how well Schlarman is developing his linemen. There are 2 schools of thought. Some would say that Swindle keeps committing dumb penalties, therefore Schlarman showing he can't coach the position. Others would say Schlarman gets a pass while he is coaching up Joker's recruits, but must do better when guys like Leavitt, GAA, Young, Jackson become the mainstays. We can cut Schlarman a certain amount of slack because he has never had a true, difference maker left tackle in his program yet. I don't count Darrian Miller in that category because his career development was screwed up long before Schlarman got here. Some of you may disagree with me there. I count the development of Leavitt and Young as the litmus test for Schlarman. Jackson is strong as an ox, should be a solid multiple year starter after Toth graduates. GAA needs to move inside to play guard. No brainers. Your pass protection on the edges is the money maker and the litmus test for Schlarman. If he gets Wills, he might be set in Lexington for a long time. But I don't think that is a given yet.

I do believe Schlarman is working with subpar talent. Guys like Swindle simply can't match up against some of the super quick D-Lineman in the SEC. But at times, I haven't seen a lot of development either. I'm sure Coach Stoops has an eye on the process of course. At least we are recruiting much better talent now on the O-Line.

Well Mike Summers UF OL looked much better than ours last night. They have 4 new starters including a former walkon. Now they weren't dominating last night but they were at least serviceable. More than I can say for our 4 returning starters OL with a 3rd year coach.

UF has elite talent albeit it young. Their OL did not outperform ours, their QB did. He kept drives alive all night under pressure with his legs. Towles had one big run and took 6 sacks. Using the TE is not on the OL coach's job it is up to the OC. Our talent at tackle is not great by any means but not many teams are going to beat the UF front 4 consistently long enough to throw mostly deep balls without keeping in additional blockers like TE's or backs who are big enough to stop a DE. The OL is better but you can't ask them to do what we did last night and expect them to succeed. They played much better in the second half and the offense was no better. They are part of the problem but an improving part. I think they are playing well enough to win if we had better play calling and QB play. The drops are a problem but one guy is hurting us a lot. He needs to not be targeted as much.

I'm up for bringing back Guy Morris if that would help us win. I thought our offensive lines were very good under him.

and that's why we are in a pickle. We knew coming into this season we don't have a lot of talent on our O-Line. So we need a QB who can compensate for that by avoiding sacks with his feet and making quick decisions. Towles can't do either of those.

Jordan Swindle 5.5 *** with offers from UL, West Virginia and Vandy. (assume Franklin offered)
George Asafo-Adjei 5.7 *** 27th OG in the country with offers from West Virginia, Minnesota, UL, Syracuse, Illinois, Florida, etc
Zach West 5.7 3 *** ranked 56th in the country with offers from Penn St, UT, Ark, Cincy, UL etc
Ramsey Meyers 5.5 3 *** UAB, UCF and some other light weights
Jon Toth 5.4 *** With offers from Ball St, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Toledo

Jervontius Stallings 5.4 2 ** offers from Colorado, Miss St and W Ky
Jarret LaRubbio 5.7 *** 23rd in the country offers from Arizona St, Duke, Cincy, Georgia Tech, Maryland, NC State, UNC, Wisconsin, WV, Washington, Vandy, Pittsburg, Nebraska, UL
Zach Meyers 5.6 *** ranked 52nd in the country offers from Kent St, Ohio and Toledo
Cole Mosier.. Walk on

Def not the most talented OL but we def have room for improvment. Their are far FAR better OL's out their that have much much worse rankings.

I think the frustration is guys recruited under Stoops have not beaten out Joker's kids and we are in year 3

- Meadows can't unseat Swindle...Krok had to transfer
- West and Meyers are still starters...Stallings/Haynes/LaRubbio/Richardson transfer

At some point, Schlarman has to coach up his OL better than he has. Last year was pretty brutal up front. I want to see this unit at the halfway point of SEC slate...but last night was pretty bad showing.

the O-Line is the one part of our offense that imo has gotten worse under Stoops.

Mike Summers' O-line was pretty good considering what he had to work with.

Schlarman's has gotten worse every year.

If its this bad all year...you combine that with an inaccurate QB like Towles and its a recipe for disaster.

I've heard a lot about Summers but I don't remember his UK OLs being better than what we're seeing now.

I hope Stoops come Monday has people out in the JUCOs searching for tackles. Earth to Stoops....recruit OTs!!
