Calipari on Wynyard: ‘Let’s slide him in there and go’

OP, thanks for posting.

Related note:

Lost in all the whining about the front court performance against UCLA were a couple of major factors:

1. Skal is a freshman who didn't play competitive basketball for about 15 months before the season (for all practical purposes).
2. Poythress is returning from an ACL injury. That's kind of a big deal
3. Some kid named Marcus Lee (UK's best rebounder, interior defender) played four minutes in that game.
4. Humphries, one year removed from turning 16, will grow as the season continues due to merely being a freshman.
5. Wynyard is joining the team. He is at the very least another big body and a kid who will compete and help the rest of the frontcourt develop.

Someone mentioned that this group lacked a Josh Harrelson-type. I think the jury's still out on that one. I mean, the 2011 frontline - which came within a three pointer of getting a chance to whip Butler in the national finals - would have probably been seen as inferior to the current front court overall, if both groups would have been objectively studied and compared on December 10th of their respective seasons.

We have a really good group. I think they'll be fine in time. Fortunately, UK has between 95 to 100 days to continue to grow as a team before it matters most, and I don't doubt that they'll put it together by March and make a run. Will they make a Final Four? Who knows, but with elite guards and a solid frontcourt, anything is possible.

If the woodchopper wants to play college ball then he needs to find another team imo....history shows he will not play for Cal.

Good points. You're right. This team has zero flaws and should therefore win the national title no problem.

Cal's comments about not having seen him play are fascinating. I thought it equally of interest when Cal said he had no idea of Lee's status or how he was doing. I think we fans believe like the head coach is there living in the Lodge or interacting with the players directly on a daily basis. And, although I am not dismissing that Pitino has to ultimately be responsible for what happened at UL, I also feel some confirmation that he likely did not know what was going on or had any direct involvement. The day to day role beyond practices are filled by other than the head coach. I guess Wynward was a recruit that they felt let's take a chance on, is a big kid, big body, and strong.

Not having seen him play in person. A bit important. Considering that this board has experts on every player at every level and most get their info via the æther or psi waves, I don't know how lack of proximity is an issue.

lol I get it Ulis your a troll or just completely lost. When did Cal not play Kyle? did Kyle not start and was the focal point of that team that year? was it not because of his performance and lack of getting better that caused him to want to transfer?

Harrelson lol you really think Harrelson was going to get PT over Cousins or Orton? but when PT opened up Josh took full advantage of it and got his. but some how he was a victim of Cals hatred for the big white dude.

who else did you put ? owe Willis. I've commented enough as had others on how lost you are on that one.

And how can you throw Hump in this mix this early lol. is it because he is a big white dude and you needed another name? hell hump has been surprised with his PT this year. but I guess you think he needs more , so doesn't matter what he thinks.

I have never said another poster is a troll or just stupid. I could just really careless and believe all have different opinions. but guy your a troll or just stupid. no way you can mention those players and say Cal never gave them a opportunity. Jorts is making money playing this game because of the opportunity Cal gave him. but some how you are trying to turn it the other way. Kyle was set to have a break out soph year and it was obvious Cal was running the team through him. Kyle showed up out of shape and like that entire team was interested in something else besides winning games. but that's Cals fault for giving him that opportunity. lol guy your not even the entire joke your just the punch line.

Ok.

What do you think Kyle?

"I was the 7th man on a national championship team, backing up Anthony Davis and Terrence Jones. Then I was a starter and one of the team's leading scorers as a sophomore."

How about you Humphries?

"I've played sporadically as a 17 year old freshman, but logged some key minutes in several games. I've also been battling an injury."

And Derek?

"Well, I warmed the bench for 2 seasons behind WCS, Trey Lyles, Karl Towns, Alex Poythress, Julius Randle, James Young, etc. Now as a junior, I'm battling Charles Matthews for a rotation spot. I still have Poyhress, Lee, and Murray ahead of me at the 3 and 4."

Josh, tell me what you think.

"I didn't get much run my first season, because Boogie, Pat, and Orton were all in front of me. They were all first round draft picks. Plus, Perry Stevenson was on the team. During my second season, I started every game, was a breakout player, and went to the Final Four. Against what everyone thought was possible I actually made an NBA roster."

Dude, your takes are terrible.

What an idiot ^!

But sure, I'll bite.
Wiltjer: was the 7th man on a national championship team logging 11+mpg as a FR, the following year he played 24mpg and was 3rd on the team in points. But he could not play defense, I suck and I'm not sure he could guard me. So he moved on.

Humphries is freakin 17. He's the first player I've heard of that will be too young to go to the NBA after his FR season. He's averaging 9mpg. His time is coming in chunks because for now he is too slow to defend quicker players, so it depends on the matchup. But when the other team has a big bruiser, he is getting significant minutes.

Willis had 8 probable NBA players in front of him on his FR team, and 9 on his SOPH team. And he was the worst defender on either of those teams (excluding walk-ons). His defense is better, but still not good, and he is not averaging 11+mpg.

Harrelson was behind an NBA all-star, a top level recruit, and a solid SR at the C position Cal's first year at UK. His 2nd year he started and played his way into a brief NBA journeyman. You might argue that Cal was forced to play him as a Sr. But the only surprise was Orton leaving (and I'm not sure how surprising that was since he stopped going to classes), so he must have been expecting Harrelson to play a role on that team.

Because that's what he said...

We, as a fan base, need to lose the "If we don't win it all the team is a failure" mindset.

I'm curious why you didn't include any guys like Hawkins or Mulder in your little list here?

It's becoming increasingly apparent that your irrational problems with Cal have to do with race. We get it already, you want the big white guys to play more (Wynyard, btw, is not actually white, he's maori). Now shut up about it already, you're embarrassing yourself.

Actually I think he's trying to bait people into agreeing with what he know's is a ridiculous take. Been some of this going on here lately and it's sad.

UK would lose a lot more games doing it the way the other poster wants....embarrassing we have fans that want players to play more just because they are a lighter color. Of course, the person you are replying to is either the biggest fake UK fan on the board (who I have on ignore) or the goofy Sith apprentice of his (who I also have on ignore). I suggest you do the same my friend and the world becomes a better place on this site at least.

Wynyard is not the answer folks. He is not going to solve problems for us big body or not. No one here has seen him play and that tells me they aren't banking on him this year

That was my take when I read that Cal has not even seen him play in person. But I'm still hoping for a pleasent surprise - and that surprise might even be Tai motivating Skal to be tougher.

Unfortunately, knowing that poster's history, I'm not sure he does know it's a ridiculous take, but instead actually is that stupid. The same guy starts ridiculous Willis threads with takes completely detached from reality, same guy is constantly bashing on Cal for not playing one "type" of player he likes as much as another type (if you know what I mean), same guy who regularly takes cheap little pot shots at our one and done players. Basically a dumbass with an agenda.

I don't understand this idiotic post. If he's good enough to help th team, he'll play. You're worthless.

You HAVE to be posting this stuff sarcastically. There is no way I can think of that you are serious.

Ask Wiltjer how to guard the pick and roll. Stallings and Cal joked about it at SEC media days. Kylie's name was never brought up but you knew who they were talking about.

Kyle had plenty of opportunities And Jorts even said he would have not had the opportunity to play in he NBA and his post game if not for Cal and going up against the competition everyday in practice.

And that's the goal, get players to the league.

@Son_Of_Saul

Good post. Find me a team that can win with a 50% Starting PG, and without their strongest inside presence. Where was UNC without Paige? Where would Kansas be with a hobbled Mason and no Perry? Could Duke still win with that? Maryland?

The only team I'm confident that can pull the "next man up" is MSU right now...
