Remember Old Cal? The PG king....well you can trace our down trend to his failure at this spot...the guy he picked to be our PG every year since FOX hasn't turned out to be good...the ones that were great at the spot did it by surprise.
OLD Cal: Wall, Knight, Teague, Andrew, Ulis, & Fox
Cal recruited the right ones and it worked out....
New:
18-Started Quade before realizing SGA was better...actually took Quade and didn't go all in on Trae Young
19-Couldn't decide on PG before letting Hagans have it...
20-Hagans wasn't cutting it while Quickley/Maxey were better...
21-Askew just wasn't cutting is....Mintz needed it...he refused...
22-Tyty in 1 game set the assist record but he wanted Wheeler
23-Wheeler again was the guy until an injury forced Cal to realize Cason was better
24-Wanted to keep forcing Wagner....when Reed and Dillingham were our best 2 players
Think about that....Cal hasn't gotten the Point Guard Spot right 1 single time since 2017. Seriously, he was forced to make changes....the PG he planned for FAILED every single season since the 2017 season...
-Don't forget...had Ulis left in 2015....Briscoe would've run the PG position...
-Quade was terrible...got lucky that SGA took over...we could've been a NIT team if not for SGA.
-Hagans figured it out but just wasn't the guy....Quickley and Maxey were just better and he didn't make the change until a mental breakdown.
-Askew was bad...he didn't even try to get a better option. We got Mintz who was serviceable but we didn't try for anyone else. Didn't try to keep Hagans or Juzang...was ready to move on
-Man...remember we could've had Marcus Carr, he wanted Wheeler. And we got lucky to get Tyty Washington because of a weird situation.
-Again...Wallace needed to be the point. Wheeler needed to go...we could've gotten another off ball shooter and it would've been a great situation. Wheeler got hurt and we sort of did better, but it was too late.
-Wagner wasn't a PG. Reed and Dilly were better. He never wanted to play Reed/Dilly/Reeves together. If it's about the draft...play your 2 top 10 picks. Talk about reputation...Dilly/Reed are going to be so popular for the future, no one will care about DJ/Bradshaw going forward.
@David Sisk & @Travis Graf tell me I'm wrong, but if you look back at every year....Cal has really failed at recruiting and playing the PG position. That's where you can see the change...
