Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco is one of the nation's top talent producing prep football programs, so it was a given that

Pierce Clarkson
would get plenty of recruiting publicity as the school's starting quarterback.

Bosco is playing a postponed season right now and that's the focus for the 6'0, 195-pound Class of 2023 quarterback. But he's got one eye on recruiting since colleges are offering.

Kentucky extended a rare California offer to Clarkson earlier in the week and Cats Illustrated caught up with him for the latest.

"I was actually talking to Coach Clink and then he put me on the phone with Coach Coen and we talked for a little bit," he said. "It turns out he actually knew my brother from a while ago and we talked about that to lighten the mood. He's a really cool guy. That's when he pulled the trigger. I guess he and my brother played against each other in college so they go a little ways back.

"He really loves my film and he loves what I could do as a player," he said. "He likes how I can run as a quarterback and he said I fit what they're looking to do as an offense."

Of course, Coen arrived at Kentucky after a stint with the Los Angeles Rams, a franchise any California prospect is going to be familiar with.

"He gave me a little background about himself when we first talked on the phone. He talked about his history as a coach and a lot about himself to help me to get to know him," Clarkson said.

Clarkson isn't the only 2023 California quarterback on Kentucky's radar. UK's Liam Coen is also in contact with five-star prospect Malachi Nelson, the No. 2 overall player in the class. Nelson's family has deep ties to the Commonwealth.

While coaches can't reach out directly to 2023 prospects Clarkson said LSU, UCLA, Michigan State, and Wake Forest are some of the other schools that have shown the most interest in him thus far.

"Right now we have two more weeks left in our season so I'm getting through that right now," Clarkson said. "I'm figuring out the offseason. As far as schools I definitely want to get out to I would say Oregon. I want to get out there. For sure I'm going to take some local visits like USC and UCLA. I'll probably go out to Wake Forest and I'll try to hit Florida State and Arizona. I'm trying to visit all the schools that have offered."
